Inspiration
We wanted to make exploration feel magical again, especially for people who are new to a city and an area and want a fun way to explore. Inspired by RPGs and open-world games, and the craze that was Pokémon Go, MarcoPolo transforms real-life places into a quest-driven adventure. Whether it's discovering a mural, buying a taco, or visiting a landmark, we wanted users to experience their surroundings with a sense of narrative, curiosity, and purpose.
What it does
MarcoPolo is a location-based exploration app that gamifies your environment through main quests and side quests. Main quests guide you to iconic landmarks, while side quests lead you to unique hidden gems like coffee shops, murals, or local traditions. As you complete quests, you receive an AI-generated “in-universe” story recap — as if your day was a legendary adventure chronicled by a fantasy bard.
How we built it
MarcoPolo was built with the Google Map API and Google Gemini API. We used Dart, Flutter, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.
