Inspiration
Our inspiration comes from a mix of Yik Yak and Receiptify! Utilizing Yik Yak's anonymity and concept of location-based interactions and Reciptify's tracking of your listening history, we created Maptify! Maptify combines the two to create the perfect social media app that encourages inclusion and allows users to discover new music near them based on what people near them are listening to.
What does it do?
Eventually, Maptify would allow users to see what others are listening to within a one-mile radius of them. The goal would be to make the radius customizable and allow users to explore what people listen to worldwide. Maptify would also display statistics comparing the area's music trends compared to the top charts in that area, and provide other fun information about the listening history of the area!
How we built it, the challenges we ran into and what we learned
After figuring out the logistics of the project, we divided up the workload and tasks to four general parts: authenticating and using Spotify API Authentication, authenticating and using Geolocation/Google Maps API, getting the statistics of the users, and creating the actual website in question. Originally, we started to work on each part by ourselves (i.e. Angelina was working on Spotify Authentication, Kelly was working on Geolocation), but we later ended up collaborating on a lot of the sections to work through the concepts and applicability of using APIs and user-generated data.
While Angelina and Kelly focused on the backend programming as CS majors, Lara and Robin focused on the UI/UX interface and making the website as user-friendly as possible, such as creating a domain, logo, and navigational tools.
All in all, although not everyone in our group was a CS major, there was a role for everyone and we were all able to contribute to the project in meaningful ways, given our educational background and willingness to make this the best 24-hour, Redbull-infused, cracked project we could develop.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are so proud of our idea and our attempts to make it come to life. Although our efforts weren't successful, we learned how we can improve for the future and figure out how to make this dream come to life.
What's next for Maptify?
Next would be to make Maptify come to life! With more time and help from mentors, we think we could make this idea come to life!
