Mappy

Inspiration

Planning a day out sounds fun… until you actually try to do it.

You start on Google Maps, then end up on TikTok watching “hidden café” videos, then someone sends a blog link, and suddenly 30 minutes have passed and you still don’t know where to go.

We kept running into this problem ourselves. Finding places isn’t the hard part, there are too many. The real challenge is figuring out which places actually fit the kind of day you want.

So we thought: what if you could just describe the vibe of your day and let something else figure out the plan?

That idea became Mappy.

What Mappy Does

Mappy is an AI that plans your day out for you.

Right now, Mappy is built specifically for Melbourne. Instead of searching through endless lists of places, you simply tell Mappy what kind of experience you want. Maybe it's:

  • a relaxed afternoon of café hopping
  • brunch followed by boutique shopping
  • exploring hidden local spots

Mappy takes that idea and turns it into a personalized Melbourne itinerary.

So instead of asking “Where should we go?”, you get a plan you can actually follow.

How We Built It

First, we needed places.

We gathered venue information from sources like Google Maps and other social media platforms so Mappy would have a collection of cafés, restaurants, shops, and interesting spots across Melbourne to work with.

Then we organized those places with simple tags. These tags help Mappy understand what kind of experience each place offers.

When someone describes the kind of day they want, the AI looks through those places and pieces together a plan that makes sense, picking spots that match the vibe.

The goal wasn't just to recommend places. It was to connect them into an experience.

Challenges We Faced

One challenge was realizing that good recommendations depend on good data. The internet has plenty of places listed, but turning that into something the AI can actually reason about takes some work.

Another challenge was making sure the plans felt natural. Early versions sometimes suggested places that technically matched the prompt but didn’t really feel like they belonged together.

What We Learned

We learned that people don’t just want more options, they want things to feel simpler and more personal.

Building Mappy also showed us that a good experience comes from more than just good recommendations. It’s about understanding intent and turning that into something that actually feels useful.

What’s Next

Right now, Mappy is focused on Melbourne, but we’d love to expand it to other cities in the future.

We also want to make the personalization even smarter.

Imagine Mappy learning your taste over time, knowing whether you prefer cozy cafés, trendy brunch spots, or hidden thrift shops, and planning days that feel almost perfectly tailored to you, whether you're in Melbourne or exploring somewhere new.
