Inspiration
As university students, we receive info about campus life from a wide variety of sources: flyers around campus, email alerts about safety issues, events on AnchorLink, or even Fizz.
This is frustrating for us when we want to get information quickly and have to check multiple platforms.
Wouldn't it be better if everything was in one place?
Our solution aims to:
- Allow people to quickly find events to attend
- Create more effective communication issues on campus to staff
- Provide a centralized source peer-to-peer help and lost item recovery
- Facilitate faster distribution of information with student-generated posts
What it does
The key feature of Mappy is an interactive map focused on the university campus area. The userbase will be limited to users with a university email. Users will be able to see up-to-date, student-reported information: alerts, safety issues on campus, campus events happening, students who need help, and lost-and-found posts. Everyone can contribute anonymously and easily make posts on the go! We hope that Mappy will make vital safety information more accessible, showcase events and issues found by fellow peers, and improve the sense of campus community.
How we built it
Backend: Firebase, React, Mapbox API Frontend: Figma, HTML/CSS
Challenges we ran into
Struggles:
- Uploading geodata from users, storing them in a database and parsing them back into app
- Large learning curve working with Mapbox API
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we were able to gain valuable experience in designing a solution that can have a real impact on university life!
What we learned
Key takeaways from this experience:
- Learned importance of effective work structure
- How to better plan product development
What's next for Mappy
In the future, we are excited about adding more interactive features to the map and deploying a mobile app version.
