Inspiration
An early experience we have with LLMs is using it to generate lists upon lists of topics to find new things to learn about. Context was hard to retain, and it can be easy to lose track of things in walls of text, so we sought something suited to help address both challenges.
What it does
MapIt generates a mind map related to a topic for further exploration, where interesting topics or subtopics can be expanded upon, as well as provide links for further learning.
How we built it
React/Next.js, D3.js, Tailwind, shadcn/ui components, Perplexity API, Vercel
Challenges we ran into
Mostly generic web development challenges related to various UI/UX considerations like handling popups, keeping text in bounds, etc.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Delivering a POC in a short timeframe
What we learned
We attempted to build this application assisted by AI tools like Perplexity (leveraging Claude), and found that sometimes needs a lot of iterations (n-shot) and refining
What's next for MapIt
Bug fixes for some known issues, additional features (per readme) but more importantly capabilities like data retention and analyzing existing textual content to generate a mind-map (RAG)
