Inspiration

Many people don't know of the accessibility option in Google Maps, since it's buried in the settings; this flaw allows for a minor market; a demographic of the physically dispriveledged who either don't know the ease of, or are frustrated, with trip planning.

What it does

MapMobility is a convenience-centered map-app using Google's Map API, with a target demographic of the physically & visually impaired; its market is one of ease-of-access, alongside quick internal accessibility, exemplified best in its colorblind options.

How we built it

Programs used: Flutter, VSCode, AndroidStudio, Github, snazzymaps.com/ Google’s MAP API

Code-Details: 6 iterations, With 18 programmed files, Totaling to 1,395~ lines of code!

Challenges we ran into

High Frustration! Had to weigh time against desire constantly. A sense of loss/grief over the lost work. And the acknowledgement that since we stood on the shoulders of giants, treading new ground was hard.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The app was an success; a map for the wheelchair-bound, that includes colorblind options, and complete android functionality- all created, and produced within a day! Our app expands the surprisingly small market of accessibility tools for those who need them, and through that, also highlights the significant lack of representation for the disabled community, with their unique needs. This gap must, and was, via our app, be addressed to promote more inclusivity and equality for all individuals, regardless of their physical or mental status.

What we learned

But by itself, that wasn't enough; we needed to carve out our own niche. So, we expanded further; the app would cater to multiple disabilities! However, with a day already gone throughout, the scope needed to be shelved.

What's next for MapMobility

While we achieved the tools for the colorblind, in theoretical expansion, we could've added; Tools for other visual impairments, such as text-resizing tools, or text-to-speech Using Google's tag features, an animal-policy filter, to accommodate those service animals Noise and unrest database/indexes would've allowed those seeking/needing silence to more comfortably navigate Other, more minor concepts: medical/charity/accessibility newsfeed, smog map for asthmatics, contagion warnings for the immunocompromised, and more!
