Inspiration
Mantramon XR was inspired by the idea that mixed reality should feel alive and creature collectors are the best way to show that. I wanted to create a world where intelligent creatures step into your room, interact with in real world, and then follow you into immersive VR arenas.
With Passthrough, Scene Understanding, Hand Tracking, and Spatial Anchors now available on Quest devices, it finally became possible to build a unified cross-reality game: part MR, part VR, all seamless.
The goal was to create something fun, accessible, and technically ambitious a project that shows why the future of games is mixed reality. It's easy to pick up, hard to put down.
What it does
Mantramon XR is a mixed reality + virtual reality creature collector, battler and racer for Meta Quest.
Players draft AI creatures into their real environment, run to collect coins. Race and battle your friends after you've trained them up. Then you can switch instantly to full VR when they want deeper immersion.
Core features
- MR Battles using Passthrough + Scene Understanding
- VR Arenas with 3D immersion
- Fun Run–style MR Racing mapped to the player's space
- Leveling and Gear customizing your Mantramon loadout.
- AI-driven Mantramon creatures that you can actually chat with in game.
- Multiplayer: real-time MR races with humans or bots.
How we built it
Mantramon XR is built in Unity using:
- Passthrough API for mixed-reality visuals
- Scene Understanding to detect floors, walls, and surfaces
- Spatial Anchors for stable, persistent placement
- Meta Spatial SDK for physics, collisions, and spatial audio
- Photon Fusion for multiplayer races
- Immersive Reality to build MR arenas and racetracks that adapt to any room size
Our pipeline was optimized for Quest 3’s improved passthrough fidelity.
Challenges we ran into
- Combining MR and VR into a seamless unified experience
- Making it work cross platform
- Stabilizing Spatial Anchors across MR environments
- Designing controls that work equally well with hands or controllers
- Ensuring MR racetracks remain fun regardless of real room shape
- Maintaining comfort while supporting fast gameplay easy to learn gameplay
- Making AI creatures that can chat with AI
- Making it fun in single or multiplayer modes.
Each challenge pushed us to refine our systems and user interaction design.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- A complete MR + VR hybrid game loop
- Stable anchored MR arenas that adapt to real environments
- Intuitive gameplay
- AI-driven creatures with dynamic responses
- MR Fun Run–style racing mode and Subway Surfer style infinate runner mode.
- Multiplayer support (live races + ghost battles)
- All development completed self-funded
What we learned
- MR design must prioritize the player's real environment and comfort
- Gameplay and tracking must be simple and intuitive to feel magical
- MR and VR should complement each other, and both equally feel immersive
- Comfort optimization influences almost every design decision
What's next for Mantramon XR
- Additional MR racing biomes and seasonal events
- Deeper integration and bug fixes
- New Mantramon classes with deeper behaviors
- Voice Interaction
- Social MR + VR hangout spaces
- Better AI-driven adaptive difficulty
- Visual upgrades tailored for Quest 3
- Preparing the project for Meta Horizon Store submission
Mantramon XR will continue evolving into a flagship cross-reality title that proves how MR, VR, AI creatures, and spatial design can work together to create something truly new.
