Inspiration
The inspiration for Manthan came from observing how learning today depends heavily on internet availability, expensive platforms, and limited personalization. Many students are willing to learn but are restricted by poor connectivity, language barriers, and high costs.
At the same time, we noticed another important issue — many teachers today are genuinely sharing knowledge, but to earn from it, they are forced to depend on third-party platforms. These platforms often control pricing, reach, and content access, which limits teacher independence and sometimes discourages them.
This hurt us as learners and developers. So we wanted to build a platform where teachers own their knowledge — they decide whether a course is free or paid, and how they want to share it. Manthan was inspired by the belief that both knowledge and money should be controlled by the teacher, not by intermediaries
What it does
Manthan is an AI-powered, offline-first education platform designed for students and teachers. Students access personalized lessons, quizzes, and learning resources Content can be downloaded and accessed offline, with progress saved locally AI adapts content difficulty and learning paths based on performance Supports regional languages, text-to-speech, and speech-to-text Teachers can upload courses and decide whether content is free or paid Teachers track student progress and engagement through analytics Gamification and community features help maintain learning consistency
How we built it
We built Manthan using a practical, real-world architecture.
Developed separate dashboards for students and teachers using React Implemented offline-first PWA features like caching and background sync Built backend APIs using Node.js / FastAPI for users, content, and progress Designed an AI personalization layer for adaptive learning and recommendations Used cloud storage for videos and learning resources, and databases for analytics
Our focus was on keeping the system simple, scalable, and affordable.
Challenges we ran into
Handling offline and online data synchronization reliably Designing AI features that are useful without being heavy or costly Supporting low-bandwidth environments Making the platform intuitive for both students and teachers Delivering a meaningful solution within limited hackathon time
Each challenge forced us to prioritize impact over complexity.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built an offline-first learning experience that actually works Empowered teachers to control their content and pricing Successfully integrated AI personalization into the platform Created inclusive features like language support and accessibility tools Delivered a complete and realistic solution under time constraints
What we learned
Education platforms should empower teachers, not restrict them Offline-first design is essential for inclusive technology AI should support learning, not complicate it Simplicity leads to better adoption Building with real users in mind creates better solutions
What's next for Manthan
Adding support for more regional languages Improving AI personalization with real user data Enabling direct teacher payouts and deeper monetization tools Partnering with schools, NGOs, and education initiatives Scaling Manthan to reach students and educators across Bharat and beyond
Manthan is built on a simple idea: Students deserve uninterrupted learning, and teachers deserve ownership of their knowledge.
