Inspiration

We built MannSahay after realizing that even in a world full of connections, so many young people still feel completely alone. Seeing students struggle silently, unable to access help due to stigma or lack of resources, inspired us to create something that could always be there — a 24/7 AI bridge of empathy.

What it does

At the heart of MannSahay is our Guide Bot, which gently helps users understand and label emotions they often can’t express. Sometimes, all a person needs is someone who listens without judging — and we tried to build exactly that.

To make this support more accessible and personal, MannSahay also offers multilingual conversations, allowing users to express themselves in the language they are most comfortable with, along with real-time voice interaction, so they can talk instead of type when words feel hard to write.

But understanding emotions isn’t always enough. So we created MannMitra, a friend-like chatbot that talks casually, comforts you, and reminds you that it’s okay to not be okay — like that one friend everyone needs at 2 AM.

We also realized that some thoughts are too personal to share if there’s even a small fear of being recorded. That’s why we built Incognito Mode — no history, no data, just a safe space where users can open up freely and let everything out.

Loneliness often comes from feeling like no one understands. To solve this, we introduced anonymous real-time chat, where users can connect with strangers who might be going through the same struggles. These small, honest conversations can sometimes heal more than long advice.

For moments when the mind feels heavy, we designed an Activity Zone — with journaling, breathing exercises, gratitude practices, and calming experiences — simple tools to gently pull someone out of overthinking.

Another challenge we faced was accessibility. Not everyone has stable internet, but emotions don’t wait. So we built an Offline Mode, ensuring that even without connectivity, support is still there.

How we built it

We built MannSahay as a complete emotional support ecosystem by combining AI, real-time systems, and thoughtful design — all guided by psychological insights.

At its core, the platform is powered by a modular backend architecture using FastAPI, allowing us to run multiple independent yet connected systems.

The Mann Backend drives both our Guide Bot and MannMitra, built using Gemini API, LangChain, and LangGraph. This enables structured, context-aware conversations with emotional sensitivity, session memory, and safety layers — ensuring that every interaction feels natural, supportive, and human-like.

To make the platform more inclusive and accessible, we also integrated multilingual support, allowing users to communicate in languages they are most comfortable with, breaking language barriers in emotional expression.

To make conversations more accessible and expressive, we integrated a Voice Backend using Google Cloud Text-to-Speech and Speech-to-Text, enabling real-time voice interactions that make the experience more personal and engaging.

For human connection, we engineered a real-time anonymous chat system using FastAPI WebSockets, asyncio, and secure in-memory state management. This allows fast, ephemeral, and safe one-on-one interactions between users — without storing personal data.

Understanding the importance of privacy, we implemented Incognito Mode, where no conversations are stored — creating a completely safe, judgment-free space for users to open up.

To ensure accessibility even without internet, we developed an Offline Mode powered by Ollama with Gemma 3:4B, allowing users to continue conversations locally on their device.

On the frontend, we used React to create a smooth and familiar user experience. Authentication and data handling are managed through Firebase Auth and Firestore, ensuring security and scalability.

The entire system is deployed on Google Cloud Run, Storage, and Cloud Functions, enabling automatic scaling and reliable performance as the number of users grows.

Each component is designed to be modular, scalable, and easy to extend — together forming a platform that can grow into a deeply personalized mental health companion for millions.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges wasn’t just building the technology, but making it feel human. We worked under psychological guidance to ensure every interaction feels safe, warm, and understanding.

MannSahay is more than just a project for us — it’s our way of making sure that no one has to sit alone with their thoughts, feeling unheard. Because sometimes, all someone needs is to feel understood.

What we learned

What's next for MannSahay

We dream of making mental health support truly accessible — starting with affordable 1:1 therapy sessions with certified professionals, so that seeking help never feels out of reach.

We also envision cozy, guided group circles led by retired professors, counsellors, and mentors — people with decades of wisdom who simply want to give back to the community. These safe spaces will allow individuals to share, listen, and heal together.

MannSahay aims to help the youth take their first brave step toward support — without fear, stigma, or shame.

But we don’t want to stop there.

As more people join, MannSahay will grow with you — learning from your experiences, reflections, and even your moods. With the help of smart technology, machine learning, and thoughtful data insights, the platform will gradually evolve into a deeply personal guide — almost like your own online psychologist.

Over time, MannSahay will understand your struggles, your growth, and your progress — creating support that feels truly personal, tailored, and just for you.
