๐Ÿ’ก Inspiration

What started as a simple school project idea evolved into Manifestation after the RevenueCat Ship-a-thon inspired meโ€”a 13-year-old solo creatorโ€”to push beyond my limits and build a complete cross-platform 3D multiplayer survival experience.

I wanted to capture the heart-pounding tension of games like Phasmophobia and Lethal Company, but tailor it into an accessible, high-performance mobile and web labyrinth where teamwork, spatial awareness, and real-time coordination are the only things keeping you alive.

๐ŸŽฎ Gameplay Overview & Objective

In Manifestation, players are deployed into an eerie underground facility as Operatives. The core objective: collaborate in real-time to bypass a 3-tier security vault lock and escape into the pine forest before the spectral entities consume you.

To survive, the squad must execute five tactical steps:

  1. Restore Grid Power: Search shadowy corridors for wall circuit breakers to power up the Master Vault Gate terminal.
  2. Collect Cipher Clues: Inspect glowing notes hidden across the maze to deduce the 4-digit security code.
  3. Crack the Vault Keypad: Locate the heavy blast gate and enter the decoded cipher into the terminal.
  4. Retrieve & Socket Twin Keys: Decrypting the keypad reveals which two gemstone keys (Amber, Sapphire, Emerald, Ruby) are required. Scour the corridors and bring them back to the gate sockets.
  5. Breach & Escape: Once grid power is live and both keys are slotted, trigger the blast doors to escape into safety.

๐ŸŒŸ Why It Matters

  • Empowering the Next Generation of Youth in STEM: As a 13-year-old solo developer, Manifestation proves that age is no barrier to building production-grade software. It demonstrates that with curiosity and modern tools, young creators can master complex systems architecture, real-time networking, and native mobile deployment.
  • Frictionless Cross-Platform Accessibility: By leveraging WebGL and Capacitor, players can jump into high-fidelity 3D multiplayer sessions directly from mobile phones or low-end laptops without needing an expensive gaming rig or massive console downloads.
  • Sustainable Indie Monetization: Demonstrates how solo indie developers can implement ethical, cross-platform monetization using RevenueCat without disrupting fair co-op balance.
  • ๐Ÿง  Cognitive Brain-Boosting & Educational Value (Mental Gym): Unlike mindless button-mashers, Manifestation actively exercises critical cognitive faculties:
    • Spatial Working Memory & Active Cartographic Mapping: Rather than relying on an easy, pre-revealed GPS map, players enter a pitch-black labyrinth shrouded in a dynamic "Fog of War." The minimap only uncovers and draws corridors as operatives physically explore them tile-by-tile. This forces players to actively cross-reference first-person 3D spatial landmarks with top-down schematic updates, exercising mental rotation, spatial chunking, and short-term navigational memory.
    • Cryptographic & Deductive Problem-Solving: Operatives must collect fragmented cipher notes and synthesize incomplete information under time constraints to deduce the 4-digit vault codes.
    • Executive Function Under Stress: Balancing limited stamina, flashlight batteries, and a dwindling Sanity meter while evading threats trains decision-making, emotional regulation, and prioritization under adrenaline and high-pressure scenarios.
    • Collaborative Communication & Leadership: Success requires verbal coordination, task division (e.g., dedicated breaker runner vs. key carrier), and peer triage, strengthening real-time teamwork and vocal leadership skills.

๐Ÿฅฝ Tactical Survival Mechanics & Operative Classes

Survival isn't just about outrunning ghosts; players must manage a dynamic Sanity System. Pitch darkness and ghost proximity rapidly drain your sanity. Drop below 40%, and terrifying shadow hallucinations begin to distort your vision. Players recover sanity by reading lore notes or sheltering under UV Light Sanctuaries (+8.5%/s recovery).

Players can deploy with specialized loadouts:

  • ๐Ÿ”‘ Locksmith: Equipped with Thermal X-Ray vision and a Breaker Remote to freeze spectral entities.
  • ๐Ÿ›‘ Trapper: Deploys Salt Barriers to block corridors and triggers Adrenaline speed bursts.
  • ๐Ÿ“ก Scout: Detects nearby ghosts with a 50m EMF Radar and carries Sanity Pills.
  • ๐Ÿ’‰ Medic: Carries Defibrillators to resurrect fallen teammates and trauma medkits.
  • ๐Ÿ”ฆ Flashlight Expert: Armed with dual high-capacity battery cells for sustained high-beam illumination and passive wall-piercing Thermal X-Ray vision.
  • ๐ŸŽ’ Quartermaster: Boasts 12 expanded inventory slots to transport keys, survival tools, and defensive gear.

โš™๏ธ How We Built It & System Architecture

Stepping into the role of solo system architect, I designed and coded the entire full-stack pipeline:

  • Core Engine & 3D Graphics: Built with Three.js and WebGL featuring modular 2m ร— 2m corridor tiles, continuous velvet carpet runners, custom FBX/GLB skeletal animation normalization, and dynamic atmospheric fog.
  • Vibe-Coding Acceleration: Leveraged Antigravity 2.0 to rapidly iterate on state machines, spatial collision math, and complex procedural dungeon generators.
  • Real-Time Multiplayer: Powered by Node.js, Express.js, and Socket.io handling authoritative lobby matchmaking, spatial voice chat, and synchronized player locomotion.
  • Mobile Bridge: Transitioned the web client to native Android and iOS using Capacitor with custom dual-zone virtual thumbsticks and adaptive mobile GPU throttling (smooth 60 FPS cap to prevent thermal throttling).
  • Monetization with RevenueCat: Integrated @revenuecat/purchases-capacitor to power the in-game store, delivering instant cross-platform entitlement sync for VIP Passes, custom prestige glow effects, and ad-free gameplay.

๐Ÿง  Technical Deep-Dive: High-Performance Optimizations

  • \( O(1) \) Spatial Neighborhood Collision: Instead of performing \( O(N) \) collision checks against all 2,000+ maze walls every frame, our custom engine hashes player and ghost coordinates into a localized \( 3 \times 3 \) grid block neighborhood. This saves over 350,000+ unnecessary vector math checks per second on mobile devices!
  • Dynamic Threat Scaling Formula: Entity counts and breaker requirements dynamically adapt to active lobby size:

๐Ÿ›‘ Challenges Faced & Triumphs

  • The Web-to-Mobile Bridge: Porting raw WebGL touch controls to mobile screens caused joystick jitter and layout scaling issues. I engineered an adaptive control loop that automatically detects touch capability and renders smooth, floating thumbsticks.
  • Cross-Platform Monetization: Setting up native store products on Google Play and Apple StoreKit can be overwhelming, but RevenueCat made verifying purchases and granting the VIP Pass across platforms clean and rock-solid.
  • AI Pathfinding & Stealth: Preventing ghosts from seeing through walls while maintaining fair horror stealth required fine-tuning Three.js depth buffer layers and line-of-sight checks.

๐ŸŽ“ What We Learned & What's Next

Building Manifestation taught me how to architect complex 3D multiplayer architectures, manage real-time network states, and design scalable in-app monetization with RevenueCat.

Our next milestone is publishing Manifestation directly to the Google Play Store, adding custom seasonal ghost abilities, and continuing to use RevenueCat to expand our cosmetic ecosystem!
