Inspiration
After working for several years in the financial sector, I often found myself frustrated when trying to make payments in VR, such as purchasing subscriptions or apps. The experience felt far from immersive—I had to switch devices to grab my card or phone every time.
While playing games like Fortnite, Nikki, and Roblox, I noticed how seamlessly their stores were integrated into the gameplay, creating an immersive shopping experience. This sparked the idea of designing a solution for VR that preserves immersion, enabling users to make transactions effortlessly. I believe this will be essential for future generations to enjoy fluid interactions in virtual environments.
What it does
Manguito is a wallet where users can personalize it just like they would in real life. The idea is for users to carry it with them, exactly as they do with physical wallets. This presents a significant opportunity for brands to include their designs, whether in the form of watches, handbags, or other customizable models.
Inspired by games like Fortnite, where personalization and brand presence are crucial for younger generations, Manguito reimagines the wallet as a personal and expressive element. At the same time, it focuses on robust security systems, drawing inspiration from today’s banking wallets. It translates familiar 2D interfaces and visual languages into interactive 3D objects.
Challenges I ran into
How do you explain an idea like this?
At first, it seemed like a great concept, but then I delved into the numbers during my research. Adoption of new technologies takes time—at least in my country. For example, it’s only been six months since virtual wallets with NFC became usable for subway payments. I feel like I’m 100 years ahead with this idea, which can make it difficult to explain or grasp.
Being an MVP, it’s far from perfect, and I have many questions that can only be answered through proper user research. For instance: What security concerns would users fear the most? Which categories would adopt this technology faster? How would it work with emerging devices like Orion glasses currently in development? These are challenges I need to explore to refine the concept and bring it closer to reality.
Accomplishments that I am proud of
One of the accomplishments I’m most proud of is the use of Shapes XR to bring the project to life visually. The level of polish and clarity achieved in the design is something I’m excited about.
I’m also proud of how I approached the ideation process—focusing on research and planning rather than rushing to build. As a designer, I know the importance of following the right methodology, but sometimes the excitement of creating something new makes it tempting to skip steps and jump straight into building.
What's next for Manguito - XR Wallet
The next step for Manguito is to share it on social media. I believe it’s an idea with great potential for success, given the right development and research.
However, like all digital wallets, it will require a longer development timeline compared to a game or other types of applications. This is due to the sensitive nature of user data and the legal considerations involved.
