Inspiration

I find so much new show recommendations in a variety of genres that I can't keep track of it all!

Here is my old process:

  1. I found the show recommendation
  2. I search the name
  3. Go check the rating if it's worth checking out
  4. Go to my streaming site
  5. Retype the name to see if they have it
  6. Finally bookmark it
  7. But then when I want to watch it, I have to scour through ALL my bookmarks to find that specific one among all my other show bookmarks then I am not sure I've finished or not T_T

Sometimes I want a to watch from a specific genre, or want to put special importance to watch that show first cause a friend told me about it, but I can't put tags on regular bookmarks and query them :/ Things could be done way faster!

What it does

It's browser extension that can turn my process just to:

  1. I found the show recommendation
  2. I search the name
  3. Go check the rating if it's worth checking out
  4. Just bookmark it with the extension :D
  5. And then I can query it whenever I want to rewatch it ^W^

There are other useful additional features such as:

  1. A complete Japanese kana board, where clicking on each letter in the board converts it to its relevant hiragana/katakana form.
  2. A dictionary function! Accessed through the Translate button, users are able to search up a term (either in English or Japanese) and get their equivalent English/Japanese definitions. Results are instant because this feature uses Jisho's public API.
  3. Clear, import, and export the bookmarks as a JSON file

How we built it

JavaScript and of course guidance on the project direction from mentors and team discussions

Challenges we ran into

Originally this was something else entirely, a translation extension that can translate any image on the webpage. But the scope was too big, and we were too inexperienced to make it in the way that we wanted it to be, light weight and as free as possible. It was inspired from people like us who don't have much money but loves manga and anime, thus why our no cost focused approach. But still in that spirit we seek to solve other problems we had and even still implemented the essence of our original idea into the translation section that we have :D

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were glad to be able to pivot on our idea into something not only achievable but also useable! There are many hackathons ideas that was made and instantly abandoned after it was made... but at the very least, I know I will be personally using this one

What we learned

To work together and not be afraid of moving on to a different path if the one we started and already invested some time is not the best one, we learned to avoid the sunk cost fallacy.

What's next for Manga Tracker

We want it to be able to synch to with a mobile web app and put the bookmarks in a database (such as MongoDB) so that users can open it both on desktop and phones
