Inspiration
We have a strong passion for video games. From our childhood, they have given us countless hours of entertainment and are more than a simple pastime. They connect people and bring awareness to new ideas and topics.
At the same time, these past few years have been very wild and difficult to deal with. We have faced many disasters such as the pandemic and large-scale fires. Climate change and air pollution are even more prevalent. Many people do not take much action to help mitigate these environmental issues.
So we thought, why not combine these two? Make a game that teaches people all about these environmental issues and have them learn good ways to combat it whilst having fun.
What it does
Our Figma design is a mock-up of what the mobile game, Man vs Nature, would look like on release.
The theme of the entire game is centralized around nature "fighting" back. In the game, one player plays as "mankind" who defends their city or house against obstacles by upgrading their buildings to help save the planet. Another player will play as "nature" and summon natural disasters, diseases, and/or climate change.
Each player has various skill trees in which they can strengthen themselves. For example, if you're the player and going against climate change, you can upgrade your city to be more energy efficient by installing solar panels.
The end goal of the game is to help teach people about small solutions to help save our planet in a more engaging and interactive setting.
How we built it
We built it using Figma.
Challenges we ran into
We had difficulties coming up with a good idea that had a meaningful impact but is also something we're passionate about. We wanted a product that would make a difference if it was launched.
We also had trouble coming up with a good design whose style fit the theme but still was fun to look at. We didn't want something too formal, but it also needed to scream fun.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of the concept we've come up with and the overall design of the project. We think the overall design is cohesive and is applicable to the real world. We're happy with the direction we've taken and are excited to think more about this project in the future.
What we learned
We learned a lot about design. It isn't easy to just whip up an interface on the go. It requires careful planning and consideration of the context. Color, font, position, size, and style are all critical elements when it comes to design.
Sometimes we wanted to include something but realized it didn't fit the overall scope of the design and had to scrap it. For example, I designed an animal to include but decided ultimately in the end that's not what the focus of our app was about.
What's next for Man vs Nature
Alongside new content for the game, we plan to code it into reality and release it on both iOS and Android appstores. We will continue refining the design and brainstorming new additions to add. There are many new possibilities and directions we can branch off into in helping spread awareness for other issues.
