Inspiration

This film was inspired by the sacred power, tenderness, and resilience of Black mothers around the world. It also carries a deeply personal layer: the music was composed by my father more than 20 years ago as a tribute to his mother. This emotional lineage became the heart of the project — a multi-generational echo of love.

What it does

The video celebrates Black mothers across the globe, capturing their grace, strength, and the quiet heroism embedded in their everyday gestures. It reveals how their love binds generations together, transcending time, culture, and geography.

How we built it

The project mixes AI-generated cinematic visuals with warm, intimate compositions inspired by real moments of care — bathing a child, comforting, guiding, protecting. The soundtrack, created decades ago, became the emotional spine of the entire film.

Challenges we ran into

Balancing cultural diversity with universal emotion, avoiding stereotypical imagery, and matching the visuals to a piece of music charged with personal and ancestral meaning were our biggest challenges.

Accomplishments that we’re proud of

We created a timeless homage that unites three generations: my grandmother, my father, and myself. The film feels universal yet deeply personal, honoring Black mothers with dignity, gratitude, and emotional weight.

What we learned

We learned how powerful it is to interweave personal heritage with cinematic storytelling, how to portray softness as strength, and how maternal love becomes an ancestral force that shapes identities across generations.

What's next for the tribute to Black Mothers

Expanding the concept into a series of films about intergenerational memory, creating portraits of maternal figures from different Afro cultures, and exploring how motherhood carries ancestral wisdom through time.
