MamaMed ~ Empowering Single Mothers

Inspiration

Mama Med was born due to a heartfelt encounter with a young woman who faced the difficult challenge of juggling her education while nurturing her newborn. At just 19, her journey taught us about the harsh realities many single mothers endure - the overwhelming struggle for access to essential healthcare resources, which is worsened due to the fact that many of them are uneducated on insurance policies and have other hurdles to getting affordable healthcare. This eye-opening experience propelled us to action, with a vision to bridge the gap for single mothers nationwide. Understanding that these resilient women often place their health needs last while focusing on their children, Mama Med aims to simplify their access to healthcare. Our platform empowers single mothers by providing comprehensive healthcare resources tailored to their unique needs.

What it does

MamaMed is a web-based platform that offers our users a diagnosis tool with initial screening healthcare questions that are specific to issues faced by women. This screening data will then be sent to the healthcare professional of their choice, which they can choose using the ‘Find a Physician’ option found in the navigation bar. The user can choose a physician of their liking depending on their proximity to them.

How we built it

We built Mama Med using primarily HTML, CSS, and JS. We also used Firebase to store data from our users, securely. We built this prototype website from scratch while working on design and function using Figma and the Colorsinpo platform.

Challenges we ran into

One challenge we ran into was figuring out how not to compromise the security of our users as all of the information they would be inputting is highly sensitive and private information. To implement a comprehensive yet simple-to-use database that provided robust security, we used the Firebase tool.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are very proud of developing our innovative diagnosis algorithm, which is designed with a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by single mothers with the use of a specific health API. By providing single mothers with comprehensive health information, we aim to empower these courageous women with the knowledge they need to lead healthier lives. Furthermore, we are thrilled about the introduction of our video call feature. This platform facilitates direct communication between single mothers and healthcare professionals, giving them a convenient yet also effective way to consult experts and make informed decisions about their health and well-being.

What we learned

We learned project management skills due to the hackathon's short time frame. Although we were a two-member team with limited time, we stayed persistent in building MamaMed. We also learned the importance of effective communication and collaboration. Furthermore, we gained hands-on experience in troubleshooting and problem-solving, which enhanced our technical skills and knowledge in web development. Since the project used a user-centered design, we learned to prioritize the needs and feedback of our target audience during development. This approach helped in making the website more intuitive and user-friendly. Lastly, working on MamaMed taught us about the significance of flexibility and adaptability, as we often had to revise our plans and strategies to overcome unexpected hurdles and ensure the project's success.

What's next for MamaMed ~ Empowering Single Mothers

MamaMed’s technical development will entail gaining user feedback for our prototype by collaborating with single mothers who are navigating healthcare complexities. In the near future, we plan on implementing a form of machine learning model that offers personalized experiences for insurance enrollment and appointment scheduling. We will also implement higher data security by incorporating robust encryption protocols and a stronger firebase system.
