Inspiration
Malanda started with a simple question: What if sending someone a message could feel like giving them a real gift?
I noticed that most digital messages are opened, read, and quickly forgotten. I wanted to create something that could make birthdays, celebrations, congratulations, appreciation, and other special moments feel more personal and exciting.
That idea inspired Malanda: a digital surprise experience where a person doesn't just receive a message—they discover it.
What it does
Malanda allows someone to create a personalized digital surprise for another person. The sender enters the recipient's name, writes a personal message, chooses four mystery gifts, selects a surprise theme, and generates a unique link.
When the recipient opens the link, they are welcomed with a personalized experience and mystery gift boxes. They choose the boxes and reveal their surprises one by one. The experience can also include music, creating a more memorable and emotional surprise.
How we built it
I built Malanda as a mobile-friendly web application designed to work smoothly on phones. I developed the creator interface, recipient experience, gift-selection system, personalized messages, surprise themes, mystery gift reveals, and unique sharing links.
I used HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to build the interactive front end. I connected Firebase to provide real-time data functionality, including recording surprise openings and gift discoveries.
I also integrated a system for unique surprise identifiers and one-time-use links so that each surprise can be treated as a special, limited experience.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was making the surprise links behave correctly. I wanted a link to work for the recipient but prevent the same surprise from being repeatedly opened.
Another challenge was connecting the front end to Firebase while making sure information was recorded correctly. I had to test the database connection, identify errors, and carefully fix the way opening information was stored.
I also had to deal with making the application work reliably on mobile devices and ensuring that the different surprise screens, gift reveals, themes, and sharing features worked together without breaking the experience.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am proud that Malanda developed from a simple idea into a working interactive digital gifting platform.
The project now has personalized surprise creation, mystery gifts, different themes, unique sharing links, real-time Firebase functionality, gift-opening tracking, and music support.
Most importantly, I created an experience where a simple digital message can become something interactive and memorable.
What we learned
What we learned
We learned how to turn an idea into a working application, build interactive features, connect Firebase, and solve problems through testing. Most importantly, we learned that challenges are an important part of creating something new.
What's next for Malanda
What's next
We plan to add more gifts, themes, music, customization, and improved sharing features. Our goal is to make Malanda a complete platform for creating memorable digital surprises.
