Inspiration

The project draws inspiration from the traditional chant Mal’cunciliu by Canta U Populu Corsu and from the surreal, feverish atmosphere of Jean-Claude Rogliano’s novel. The Mazzeru—mystic hunter, oracle, wanderer of shadow and light—embodies the delicate frontier between vision and madness. Visually, the film blends Pre-Raphaelite dreaminess, Tim Burton’s gothic whimsy, and the ancestral mysticism of Corsican forests.

What it does

The film immerses the viewer in the psychic landscape of the Mazzeru. Through trance-like sequences, shifting identities, and forest spirits whispering at the edge of perception, it portrays the dangerous magnetism that binds Lesia to him. It becomes a poetic descent into obsession, enchantment, and the haunting breath of ancient nature.

How we built it

The visuals were crafted via Dreamina AI, shaped to evoke a mix of Pre-Raphaelite painting and gothic surrealism. Duo tons palettes, elongated silhouettes, and ritualistic movements echo the Mazzeru’s liminal nature. The montage was constructed around the neo-classical reorchestration, matching each surge of emotion with visions of shadow, trance, and forest mysticism.

Challenges we ran into

A major challenge was conveying the Mazzeru’s madness without slipping into caricature or grotesque psychopathy. Another was weaving together the chant’s poetic mysticism and the novel’s darker psychological tones while keeping a coherent aesthetic. Finding the balance between beauty and unease required fine, delicate calibration.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We created a unique visual identity—Romantic, gothic, and mythic—that feels both timeless and contemporary. The film succeeds in expressing the Mazzeru’s dual nature (angel/demon, healer/hunter) with subtlety and emotional resonance. The forest becomes a living character, mirroring Lesia’s own descent into wonder and fear.

What we learned

We learned how powerful symbolic imagery becomes when anchored in strong cultural roots like Corsican folklore. This project deepened our understanding of visual psychodrama—how to evoke madness through atmosphere rather than excess. It also pushed us to refine how AI-generated art can emulate classical painterly styles.

What's next for Mal’cunciliu

This film is part of a wider anthology exploring Corsican traditional chants through universal mythologies. Next, the project should be integrated into a live performance cycle, blending neo-classical music and immersive visuals to create a dreamlike, ritualistic experience. I want to see the head of J.C when he watch the clip.
