Inspiration
The inspiration comes from the critical situation in Afghanistan, where girls have been restricted from formal schooling since 2021. Maktab e Fatima Tuz Zahra was born out of a necessity to bridge this educational gap using technology, ensuring that geographical and political barriers do not silence the intellectual potential of an entire generation. We wanted to create a digital sanctuary that honors the legacy of education while providing modern, accessible tools for those left behind.
What it does
This platform serves as a decentralized, secure learning hub tailored specifically for students in restricted environments. It provides:
Asynchronous Learning: High-quality video lessons and reading materials that can be accessed at any time.
Localized Curriculum: Content translated and adapted to be culturally relevant and linguistically accessible.
Low-Bandwidth Optimization: A "light" interface designed to function in regions with unstable internet connectivity.
Safe Progress Tracking: Secure accounts that allow students to maintain their educational journey privately.
How we built it
The project was architected with a focus on resilience and privacy.
Backend: Developed using FastAPI for high performance and secure RESTful API endpoints.
Database: Utilizing neondb for real-time data management and robust user authentication.
Frontend: A responsive React application designed with a mobile-first approach to accommodate students using smartphones.
Content Delivery: Optimized media compression to ensure lessons are downloadable and viewable on low-end devices.
Challenges we ran into
One of the primary hurdles was security. Ensuring user anonymity while providing personalized progress tracking required a careful balance of encryption and data minimization. Additionally, designing for intermittent connectivity forced us to rethink traditional streaming models, leading us to implement a robust offline-first synchronization logic so students could learn without a constant live connection.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are particularly proud of the UI/UX design, which incorporates traditional aesthetic elements—like the arches and calligraphy seen in our branding—to create a sense of belonging and cultural pride.
What we learned
This project reinforced the idea that Agentic AI isn't just for enterprise productivity; it is a vital tool for social impact. We learned how to optimize LLMs to act as empathetic tutors and how to build "wrappers" that are functional in extreme environments. We also gained a deeper understanding of the specific pedagogical needs of students who have been out of a formal classroom setting for several years.
What's next for Maktab e Fatima Tuz Zahra
The immediate next step is the integration of offline peer-to-peer (P2P) mesh networking, allowing students to share educational resources without any internet access at all. We also plan to expand our content library to include vocational training in software development and AI literacy, empowering these girls to enter the global remote workforce
