MakeUC_TeamTrojanWave_CovidGuidance

Hackathon project using EchoAR

During University of Cincinnati's MakeUC 2020 this project was created to explore EchoAR, and its console along with Unity. The project attempted to create an image and video gallery in AR which showed COVID19 guidelines as relevant according to location or the image.

We are a team of new hackers so our other main goal was just to explore a new technology and do our best to create a product. We were inspired by some of the demo projects EchoAR's Github had and wanted to take the important information about covid and display it in an interesting way.

We used EchoAR's console to created augmented reality video and image displays on top of specific images, or location specific images. We tried to also include Unity to build a complete mobile AR application but that proved to be our biggest challenge as we tried to learn it all in one day. EchoAR had great resources about EchoAR + Unity, but Unity proved to be too complex for us to grasp enough in 24 hours to successfully build an app through Unity.

The other main challenge we faced was location differences. Our first idea involved products that certain team members couldn't access because of location which changed our trajectory of thinking. The time zones were also difficult because it meant our communication had to be very clear for others to understand, even if we weren't there to explain.

This leads to our final product which utilizes EchoAR's platform to generate websites so the user doesn't need to have an app installed to view the augmented reality. Through EchoAR's console, our gallery still works but it must be viewed individually.

Throughout this hackathon, we learned to not worry about success but have fun with learning new things and failing. All of us grew and learned something new, and we created a welcoming environment by setting somewhat big goals but have reasonable expectations on what we could do in 24 hours. Overall, we enjoyed exploring AR and meeting each other.
