Inspiration
MaizeConnect was inspired by the gap between maize farmers and industrial buyers in Cameroon. Although farmers produce large quantities of maize, much of it is rejected due to poor quality caused by wrong varieties, diseases, high moisture content, and poor storage. At the same time, industries rely heavily on imports. We wanted to design a technology-driven solution that helps farmers meet quality standards and access better markets.
What it does
MaizeConnect is an AI-powered platform that guides farmers through the maize production process. It provides support for proper planting, crop growth monitoring, disease and pest detection, irrigation planning, harvest timing, and post-harvest quality management. The platform also aims to connect farmers directly to industrial buyers who require consistent and high-quality maize.
How we built it
MaizeConnect is currently under development. The system is being designed as a mobile-first platform supported by a backend server. Farmers will use a mobile application to take photos of their crops, which will be analyzed using computer vision models. The platform will integrate weather data to support decision-making and use a backend system to manage user data, quality information, and market connections.
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge is designing a solution that works in rural areas with limited internet access. Another challenge is ensuring that AI recommendations are accurate, explainable, and trusted by farmers. We also identified the difficulty of collecting high-quality local data for training AI models that reflect Cameroonian farming conditions.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of clearly defining a real and impactful problem and designing a technically feasible solution around it. We have developed a strong system architecture, identified appropriate AI models, and aligned the project with real industry needs. The project also demonstrates how AI can be applied responsibly in agriculture.
What we learned
We learned how to translate real-world agricultural challenges into technical system requirements. We also learned the importance of simplicity, offline functionality, and explainable AI when designing solutions for rural users. This project strengthened our understanding of applying AI to solve practical problems.
What's next for MaizeConnect
Next, we plan to build a functional prototype, collect local training data, and test the platform with a small group of farmers. We also aim to validate the solution with industrial buyers and refine the system based on feedback before scaling to more users and regions.
