Inspiration
This was a passion project spawned mostly from my interest in the railroad and how often I use it when I'm at home.
What it does
Allows a user to create a persistent map of a railroad system, using different types of infrastructure with the ability to add flags for required maintenance.
How I built it
I used a node.js server coupled with bootstrap and sqlite to make a proof of concept example on how this tool could be useful for a railroad or a system with lots of infrastructure
Challenges I ran into
- exact and sql were both new technologies that i had never previously used and had to spend a lot of time debugging to ensure that they would work properly. loading into the database required a lot of complex operations.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Front-end was completely human-coded and is dynamically scalable and feels robust to use
- the program works quite well and talks to the database with no real issue
- complete git repository showing stages of the project as it came to where it is now
What I learned
- how to use an sql database to plug in, remove, and update values
- new javascript functionalities
- how to interact with node through a command line interface
What's next for maintenance-map
- time tracking based calendar software
- advanced map icons containing glyphs
- more railroad centric map rendering
about ai use
ai was used mostly for sql operations and code with exact as these are tools i've never previously used and struggled to grasp within the timeframe. the rest of this project was made mostly by googling and using documentations to ensure all code was understood before it was used
