Inspiration
Our team consists of a multicultural, multidisciplinary group of strong women and non-binary people. Looking around RIT, we were inspired by all the people that helped us get to where we are. This website is a love letter to all the people out there who are helping people like us either by mentoring or uplifting our voices; by waking up every day and deciding to make the world a little better for everyone. We wanted to amplify these “helpers” by spreading their good work to the people like us who need it, so we decided to make a website that provides resources to anyone who needs it.
What it does
This website acts as a resource to anyone who needs inspiration or support going into STEAM. Our aim is to make STEAM mainstream. We put inspirational moments of representation for women at the forefront of this, listing some women who inspired us to reach for the stars. In addition to this, we have created resources to hone your skills and compete in hackathons like this one, as well as listed career opportunities and project ideas that a highschool student can be inspired and motivated by.
How we built it
We used bootstrap to create professional-looking web pages to link to a display various resources for women to be more informed about STEAM.
Challenges we ran into
At first, we weren't quite sure what direction we wanted to take this project in. We had a strong sense of what we wanted to accomplish at the end, but we weren't quite sure how to get there. Eventually, we were able to put our heads together and come up with an empowering website that we wish we had when we were in high school. We also struggled to deploy the website to the domain Mainsteam.online. In order to submit our project on time, we had to divide up the remaining work and work around the resulting limitations creatively.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
After a day (and night!) of our hard efforts, we are proud to present a professional final website with a wide variety of information in one place for those who wish to learn about STEAM.
What we learned
Together we learned how to create a professional-looking website using Bootstrap and some HTML / CSS knowledge. The time spent was a good bonding experience and jointly figuring out how to use Floobits brought the team together through shared exploration struggles. Discussing how the layout should work and the graphics helped us learn more about digital design and how it compliments a project. Most importantly, we learned how important it is to take whatever help we can get from the people and resources that are available to us and pass it on to as many people as possible.
What's next for MainSTEAM
While there is some information up on the website already for each concept, the plan moving forward is to add a more diverse array of hackathons, projects, games, and quizzes. In addition to this, we hope to have more interactive features to make it more engaging and exciting.
