Inspiration
My inspiration came from Greg's email, I had been looking for a better problem to solve for a while. One day it just landed in my Inbox from Ideabrowser. I knew this is it! Creating charts for newsletters is a chore. As a newsletter creator myself, I found tools like Canva or Excel either too generic, too slow, or not optimized for email. I wanted something that let me turn my research and stats into beautiful, branded visuals—fast, and without design headaches. That’s where the idea for MailSnippet was shaped.
What it does
MailSnippet is an AI-powered chart builder made specifically for newsletter and content creators. Instead of wrestling with templates or tweaking one element at a time, users simply describe their data in plain English. MailSnippet’s AI recommends the best chart, instantly generates a polished, magazine-style visualization, and optimizes it for newsletter export. Users can customize layouts, backgrounds, and fonts, then export their charts directly for use in any email platform.
How we built it
We built MailSnippet from the ground up on Bolt.new, using:
Next.js 14, React, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS for a modern, minimalist UI.
Charts.js & Recharts for flexible chart rendering.
OpenAI API for natural language understanding and chart recommendations.
Supabase for authentication, user management, and backend.
Stripe for SaaS billing.
The app features a two-panel workspace (input + preview), sticky “Built on Bolt” badge, and a seamless onboarding flow with email confirmation (turned off for hackathon temporarily)
Challenges we ran into
- Translating natural language input into structured chart data was a major technical hurdle. We iterated on prompt engineering and data parsing to make it reliable.
- Making charts look great in all major email clients required lots of testing and tweaking export options.
- Ensuring the AI’s chart recommendations matched real-world newsletter needs, not just generic data viz, took multiple feedback cycles with creators.
- Building a frictionless, secure demo experience for judges while keeping real user data private.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a fully functional SaaS app, from authentication to billing, in under a month.
- Achieved true “natural language to chart” flow—no CSVs or manual mapping required.
- Created magazine-style templates that make newsletters look professional and unique.
- Optimized exports for email, ensuring charts look sharp everywhere.
- Implemented a demo mode so judges can experience the product instantly.
What we learned
- Newsletter creators value speed, simplicity, and branding above all else.
- AI can dramatically lower the barrier to great design, if paired with the right UX.
- The details matter: email-safe colors, mobile-friendly layouts, and frictionless onboarding all make a big difference.
- Building for a real, specific user (newsletter creators) leads to better product decisions than chasing generic “everyone” use cases.
