📌 Inspiration

As students navigating the fast-paced world of internships, placements, and job opportunities, we often struggled to keep up with important emails. Traditional inboxes felt cluttered and outdated, and replying formally to recruiters or professors was time-consuming. Inspired by the simplicity of messaging apps like WhatsApp, we decided to reinvent the email experience to make it chat-like, intelligent, and student-friendly. That’s how MailSense was born, powered by our AI assistant Kiro.

💡 What it does

MailSense transforms your Gmail inbox into a WhatsApp-style chat interface. It syncs with Gmail, pulls in your emails, and uses AI (Kiro) to help you:

  • 🧠 Summarize long emails
  • ✍️ Draft smart, professional replies
  • ⏰ Schedule interviews and reminders
  • 🔒 Verify users with Google account
    It turns your traditional inbox into a real-time messaging experience secure, conversational, and intelligent.

🛠️ How we built it

  • Frontend: Built using Next.js and Tailwind CSS for a modern, mobile-friendly UI.
  • Backend & Auth: Used Firebase Authentication for secure login and user sessions.
  • Email Integration: Integrated Gmail API and Google OAuth to fetch/manage emails.
  • AI Integration: Developed smart reply and summary logic with prompt-based flows, powered by our assistant Kiro.
  • Twilio API: Simulated WhatsApp-style interactions and messaging using Twilio.

⚠️ Challenges we ran into

  • Gmail API scopes and authentication flow were difficult to configure correctly.
  • Parsing HTML-rich emails into clean chat UI required careful formatting.
  • Balancing async email updates with real-time UI updates was tricky.
  • Ensuring AI-generated content was accurate and helpful took iteration.
