Inspiration
Emails are an essential part of everyday communication, but managing a crowded inbox can become overwhelming. Important messages get buried, deadlines are missed, and writing replies takes valuable time. We wanted to build a solution that goes beyond simply organizing emails and helps users turn their inbox into actionable tasks. This inspired us to create MailCraft, an AI-powered email action agent that makes email management smarter, simpler, and more efficient.
What it does
MailCraft helps users manage their emails through AI-powered assistance and voice-based interaction. Its key features include:
Smart Email Summarization: Converts lengthy emails into concise, easy-to-understand summaries.
Email Prioritization: Helps users identify important messages that need attention.
Task and Deadline Extraction: Identifies actionable items and deadlines mentioned in emails.
AI Reply Drafting: Helps users prepare relevant replies more efficiently.
AI Chat Interface: Allows users to interact with the agent using natural-language requests.
Voice Interaction: Uses Amazon Alexa to provide a voice-based way to interact with supported email workflows.
Unified Dashboard: Brings email priorities, tasks, and upcoming deadlines into one place.
How we built it
We built MailCraft using a combination of web technologies, AI services, and voice integration tools.
React: Developed the interactive frontend and dashboard.
Node.js and Express.js: Built the backend and handled application requests.
JavaScript and REST APIs: Connected the different application components.
Gemini API: Powered AI-based reasoning and natural-language email interactions.
Model Context Protocol (MCP): Provided a structured way to connect the AI agent with tools for email and task-related actions.
Amazon Alexa and Alexa Skills Kit: Enabled voice-based interaction.
AWS Lambda: Supported serverless execution of the Alexa skill logic.
Together, these technologies form the foundation of MailCraft, bringing AI assistance, email workflows, and voice interaction into a unified experience.

Accomplishments that we're proud of
We brought together AI-powered email assistance, task organization, and voice interaction in one project. We are proud of designing a dashboard that makes important information easier to access and creating a workflow focused on helping users move from reading emails to taking action.
What we learned
Building MailCraft helped us explore how AI APIs and MCP can support tool-connected applications. We gained practical experience with React, Node.js, Express.js, REST APIs, the Gemini API, the Alexa Skills Kit, and AWS Lambda. We also learned that an effective AI agent needs more than natural-language responses: it needs useful actions, clear feedback, and reliable integration between components.
What's next for MailCraft
We aim to improve MailCraft with more reliable email-provider integrations, better priority detection, smarter deadline reminders, and expanded voice commands. We also plan to strengthen security, improve error handling, and make the experience more personalized so users can manage their email workflows with greater confidence and less manual effort.
