Inspiration

Our project was inspired by the need for better communication among organizations responding to floods in Myanmar. Often, poor coordination leads to some villages getting too many donations, while others don’t get the help they need. Additionally, there are few flood response apps designed specifically for Myanmar that provide accurate and timely data to support relief efforts.

What it does

Our app enhances flood response by enabling direct communication between organizations and communities. It provides real-time flood alerts, accurate weather data, and tracks flood patterns to predict potential risks using past data, helping prevent donation overlap and ensuring resources reach the right places.

How we built it

We built the app using React Native, allowing us to create a cross-platform solution that works seamlessly on both iOS and Android devices. We utilized Firebase for user authentication and real-time database capabilities, ensuring secure and efficient data management. Additionally, we integrated APIs for weather data, which helps assess flood risks and inform users in real time.

Challenges we ran into

During development, we faced several challenges. One big issue was making sure we could collect accurate and reliable data for flood predictions. We also had trouble designing an easy-to-use interface for people with different levels of digital skills. Additionally, working with non-profit organizations to understand their needs for the app required constant communication and teamwork.

Key Functions

Dedicated Township Channels:

-For every township affected by floods, Maha Link creates a unique communication channel. This allows organizations to engage directly with the community they intend to support.

-Each channel serves as a dedicated space for updates, donation needs, and logistical planning, ensuring that information is relevant and accessible to both the organizations and the villagers.

-Organizations those who are intended to provide assistance to certain locations will be added to the seperate channels created for that locations so that they can share details about their planned donations, such as types of aid and estimated delivery times, enabling villagers to prepare and understand what to expect.

Global Chat Feature

-The global chat functionality connects all organizations, facilitating real-time communication to prevent overlapping donations, information sharing and also flood alerts.

-Organizations can discuss their plans, share insights, and coordinate efforts to ensure that each township receives the necessary support without duplication of resources.

-This feature promotes transparency and collaboration, allowing different groups to align their efforts and maximize their impact.

Accurate weather updates:

-When user select the location on a map by pinning, it will provide timely and accurate weather forecasts and flood alerts, keeping communities informed about potential risks.

-Users receive notifications when severe weather is predicted, allowing them to take precautions and stay safe.

What's next for Maha Link

Looking ahead, we plan to implement IoT devices to gather real-time data on weather conditions and flooding. This integration will allow us to enhance the accuracy of our flood risk assessments. Additionally, we aim to use satellite communications to ensure seamless communication in areas where internet connectivity is compromised due to flood damage, further improving our app’s effectiveness in disaster response. Also we are planning to implement advanced flood risk analysis function by using machine learning.

Conclusion

Maha Link is more than just a flood monitoring system; it’s a complete platform aimed at improving collaboration and efficiency in disaster response efforts. By connecting organizations with communities through dedicated channels and a global chat feature, we want to enhance communication, prevent overlapping donations, and better support those in need during critical times.

Join us in our effort to make disaster response more effective and helpful for every village in Myanmar. Stay tuned for updates on how Maha Link is changing disaster management!
