Inspiration 🌸

Coming from an Indian background, our team knew how normal it is to overlook domestic abuse in a society. If you tell someone about it, even a loved and trusted person, they may invalidate your experience and say that it is a normal situation to be in. We wanted to make sure that people wouldn't feel overlooked or blamed for what they were experiencing, so we decided to create an app to help offer support and a sense of community to domestic abuse victims.

What it does 💜

To solve these issues, we created Magnolia, an app that would provide people with resources to help them know exactly what they are experiencing and personalized ways for them to leave their situations, as well as methods to help them become stable afterward. Magnolia provides information about the different types of abuse, safety and exit plans that victims could utilize, frequently asked questions answered by therapists, and resources that the victims could use, all while keeping the app disguised so the abuser won't know that the user is seeking help. Since our app is a resource hub, there is not much guarantee that users will repeatedly visit it multiple times. However, taking into account how victims of abuse are most often gaslighted into thinking that their situation is normal, our app provides them with a support system and the validation that their situation is in fact - not normal. This makes users frequent the app often in times of need and for professional advice.

How we built it 🌸

Our app was designed on Figma and then exported onto Thunkable to be coded there.

Challenges we ran into 💜

We ran into challenges with both finding a platform to code on and also making the code work. However we solved these issues by asking help from our advisor and troubleshooting by trying different things over a long period of time. Another challenge we encountered was outreach-based. We emailed and cold-called many different organizations with domestic abuse programs, however we ended up only getting a response back from one, Doorways For Women and Children. This source ended up being a great reference and source of information to support the way our app is structured.

Accomplishments that we're proud of 🌸

We are proud of the way our app turned out visually, and with our idea. We believe our idea is very strong and we are excited to see the impact this will have on our community. We are also proud that we have been able to communicate with Doorways throughout our project and add them as a resource for our users. Our app values accessibility. There are a few key features incorporated to make sure that victims of wide ranges of disability and impairment are able to access our services, such as bigger navigation bars and a color theme that is accessible to people who are colorblind and with contrast disabilities.

What we learned 💜

As a group, we learned the values of perseverance, time management and teamwork. We went through a lot of trial and error to arrive at our final product and with our ups and downs, we managed to persevere and push through to success.

What's next for Magnolia 🌸

In the future, our team plans to add more personalized features such as a Q&A spot where the app will connect to professionals who can answer questions on domestic abuse. We also would like to connect with more organizations and gain sponsors so that we can help dependents and those in economic abuse situations better. This will help accelerate our app even after RSA to reach the public and make a change in our community.
