Inspiration

The idea for Margin Call emerged from three key observations:

  1. Mental health support remains financially out of reach for many, with traditional therapy costs creating a significant barrier for underserved communities. A personal experience of being quoted $200 per session for therapy while struggling as a student made us realize how prohibitive these costs can be.

  2. The stigma and anxiety associated with seeking in-person mental health support prevents many individuals from taking the first step towards getting help.

  3. The stark numbers tell the story: with 83M Americans experiencing mental health challenges annually, but only 60% having access to care, there's a clear need for an innovative solution.

What it does

Margin Call is an innovative online platform that democratizes access to mental health support through several key features:

  • Anonymous Rant Space: Users can record video messages expressing their thoughts and feelings in a safe, judgment-free environment
  • AI-Powered Analysis: Our system analyzes these recordings for emotional context and sentiment to better understand user needs
  • Smart Therapist Matching: Based on the AI analysis, users are connected with therapists who best match their specific needs
  • Flexible Session Options: Users can engage in direct video sessions with therapists, with options for pro bono or low-cost support
  • Real-Time Transcription: Live captioning during sessions ensures accessibility and helps users track their therapy journey

How we built it

We built Margin Call using a modern, scalable tech stack:

  • Frontend: Next.js with TypeScript for a robust, type-safe user interface
  • Video Processing: WebRTC for real-time video communication
  • Speech-to-Text: Azure Cognitive Services for live transcription
  • Cloud Storage: AWS S3 for secure storage of video recordings
  • Authentication: Next-Auth for secure user management
  • UI Components: Tailwind CSS for responsive design
  • State Management: React hooks for efficient state handling
  • AI Integration: Custom ML models for sentiment analysis and therapist matching

Challenges we ran into

  1. Conducting in person customer interviews to validate our problem statement took serious thought and courage
  2. Privacy and Security: Implementing end-to-end encryption and ensuring HIPAA compliance while maintaining system performance
  3. Real-Time Processing: Handling live video streaming and transcription simultaneously without degrading user experience
  4. AI Accuracy: Fine-tuning our sentiment analysis to provide meaningful therapist matches
  5. Scalability: Designing the system to handle multiple concurrent video sessions efficiently
