Inspiration

For many years now we have seen this kind of tech being made by tech and DIY channels. With our shared background in robotics we felt a call to dust our old gear and put something together.

What it does

The magic mirror first and foremost is a mirror, it's a 2-way mirror that lets a GUI behind it through. It can be customized to tell you anything. At the moment the mirror has installed and developed weather and weather forecast, upcoming holidays, time and date, upcoming sport games and scores after they finish (Ours is March Madness NCAA and FIFA), and has full remote access from your phone

How we built it

List of Materials Picture Frame 2-Way Mirror Tint Raspberry Pi 3 1x4 Wood Planks Old Monitor Magic Mirror 2 open source modules

To Build this device we first initialized our Raspberry Pi with the Magic Mirror 2 open source code. Once we had test the each module with our adjustments in logic and aesthetic we started working in the hardware. First we took apart a monitor as we would not be needing the plastic or buttons and they would just add bluck, we then put together a frame attached it to the old frame. All that was left to do turn our glass from the picture frame into a 2-way mirror using the tint and combine everything together

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest Challenge was working with materials we had never used before, working with glass and tint was not something we experienced and had to learn by trial and error. Oh the heart "shattering" moment when as trying to get air bubbles out from the tint we cracked the glass. After planning on what to we calm devised that we would go buy another picture frame with the same sized glass and retry with more method and a much gentler touch

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We feel very proud to even have gotten all the pieces to work together, we had worked in robotics in the past as programmers, but this time it was just the 2 of us and we were the whole team. We felt very proud to even have gotten it work let alone together, this will be a project we carry with us for a long time

What we learned

We learned some hardware skills that we can now apply to making not just more magic mirrors, but hard devices as well. It was our first time using the raspberry pi as the main cpu for a device so we learned how to set the whole software up on the device.

What's next for Magic Mirror

Next for the Magic Mirror is a complete overhaul of its physical aesthetics. The Frame is made of cheap wood and the glass is very thin compare to you would normally use. Our tint has many tiny blemishes from reapplying. We also need a second one now :)
