Inspiration

In many fantasy settings wizards cast spells through very complicated means. However, this idea of spellcasting being complex has largely eluded the gaming industry, and for some very good reasons. Players might have difficulty playing the game if a core gameplay element is too complex. Therefore I set out to create a magical combat system that has many complexities and yet is understandable and fun to learn.

What it does

Magic Generator & Wizard Battle Simulator is a simple simulation of combat between the player and an AI opponent. featuring a intricate system of combination to form magical spells.

How I built it

I used entirely a C++ console application for the game logic and programming. The spellbook data is stored in a sqlite database that the program generates when it is launched.

Challenges I ran into

My own tiredness led to several small but critical mistakes in the code which cost me at least two hours.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Figuring out how to implement the database and store data in it in a way that allows for quick and easy integration with the program. Some ASCII art for when the program first loads. Coming up with the idea and get as far as I did in only 12 hours!

What I learned

Sometimes when you start your project at a hackathon, all of your plans will fall apart and that's not always your fault. But the key is to keep working beyond those failures until you find something that works, regardless of if you'll finish in time.

What's next for Magic Generator & Wizard Battle Simulator

I want to add multiplayer support, that is unfortunately one of the things I ran out of time on. I would also like to move the it over to a different program to give the game some graphics. And most importantly making the combat system compatible with multiple styles of game. Whether that be 3D in some sort of FPS, or a 2D RPG.
