Inspiration

Most maternal health apps focus on just one phase — either period tracking or pregnancy. But real life isn’t segmented like that.

We wanted to build something that supports the entire journey — from the first step of understanding your body to caring for your baby after birth.

MaEternal was inspired by the idea that women don’t just need tracking tools, they need a calm, supportive companion that understands their physical and emotional journey across all stages.

What it does

MaEternal is an AI-powered maternal wellness companion that supports women across three phases:

  • Pre-Pregnancy: Cycle tracking, ovulation insights, and body awareness
  • Pregnancy: Week-by-week fetal growth tracking, symptom logging, and nutrition guidance
  • Postpartum: Baby growth tracking, recovery support, and emotional wellness

It also includes:

  • A Today Card for personalized daily insights
  • A phase-aware AI assistant (MamaAI) for guidance and support
  • A journey timeline connecting all stages
  • Mood tracking, nutrition tracking, and soft health insights

Unlike traditional apps, MaEternal provides continuous care, not isolated features.

How we built it

We built MaEternal as a frontend-focused, modular web application.

  • Frontend: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, TypeScript
  • Framework & Tooling: Vite, Tailwind CSS
  • AI Integration: Google Gemini API for conversational support
  • Design: Soft, pastel UI with a focus on emotional comfort and accessibility

We used a component-based architecture to separate features by phase (pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, postpartum), allowing dynamic UI changes based on user context.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was balancing useful health insights with non-diagnostic safety.

We had to ensure:

  • The AI remains helpful but does not give medical advice
  • Insights are informative but not alarming
  • The UI stays simple despite multiple features

Another challenge was designing for emotional sensitivity, making sure the experience feels supportive rather than overwhelming.

  • Creating a phase-based system that adapts to the user’s journey
  • Building an AI assistant that feels empathetic and context-aware
  • Designing a calm, non-clinical user experience
  • Extending support beyond pregnancy into postpartum care
  • Delivering a product that focuses on continuity, not fragmentation

What we learned

We learned that maternal wellness is not just about tracking data — it’s about emotional support, clarity, and trust.

We also learned how to:

  • Design AI interactions that feel human and safe
  • Build user flows that adapt to different life stages
  • Prioritize UX and storytelling over feature overload
