Inspiration

The inspiration for Fill in the Fun came from the creative and humorous nature of Reddit users. With countless witty comments and clever edits filling the platform, I wanted to channel that energy into a game that encourages creativity and friendly competition. By leveraging the top posts from subreddits, I aimed to create an engaging way for people to interact with content they already love while adding their personal touch.

What it does

Fill in the Fun is a word game app that transforms popular Reddit posts into a playful challenge. The mod of a subreddit starts the game. Users are then tasked with blanking out two words from the post and replacing them with their own funnier or more creative words. Submissions are added as comments to the original post, and the community votes for their favorites. The submission with the most upvotes wins the game! To keep the game fair and fun, players must submit two different words, each at least four letters long.

How we built it

The app was built using Devvit, Reddit’s platform for enhancing the Reddit experience through custom applications. We utilized Reddit’s Block UI to design interactive elements, ensuring a seamless and intuitive user experience for both mods and players.

Challenges we ran into

As a newcomer to Devvit, there was a steep learning curve involved in understanding its features and capabilities. Building a functional app within a tight 3-day timeframe was another challenge, requiring efficient decision-making and quick troubleshooting.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I’m incredibly proud of creating a fully functional app in just three days. This was my first project using Devvit, and I’m thrilled with how smoothly the integration worked out. It’s especially rewarding to build something fun for Reddit, a platform I’ve loved for years. I’m excited about the potential to enhance the app further in the future.

What we learned

This project taught me the ins and outs of working with Devvit and gave me valuable experience in rapid app development. I learned how to effectively integrate user submissions and voting systems into an app, as well as how to prioritize features to meet a tight deadline. Most importantly, I gained insights into building fun, user-centered experiences that bring communities together.

What's next for Fill in the Fun

  1. Improving the UI: Refining the interface to make it even more intuitive and visually appealing, ensuring users enjoy a seamless experience while interacting with the game.
  2. Embedding a Rules Section: Integrating a clear and accessible rules section directly into the game interface to help new players quickly understand how to participate and ensure fair play.
  3. Adding a Leaderboard: Introducing a leaderboard to track and showcase the top players, highlighting users who consistently win games and fostering friendly competition within the community.
