Macoostudy — AI Career Copilot

💡 Inspiration

Millions of college students and fresh graduates submit hundreds of job applications only to be met with complete silence. Traditional resume builders charge upwards of $30/month just to give a meaningless generic percentage score without explaining why a recruiter ignored it. We wanted to build a brutally honest, fast, and affordable AI Career Copilot that tells students the unvarnished truth about their resume and helps them fix it instantly.

🚀 What it does

Macoostudy analyzes candidate resumes in under 15 seconds:

Brutally Honest AI Roast: Pinpoints vague buzzwords, lack of metrics, and weak summaries. ATS Compatibility & Keyword Gap Analysis: Scans your resume against real industry requirements to find missing technical skills. Side-by-Side Bullet Rewriter: Transforms weak task descriptions (e.g., "helped with backend") into quantified, impact-driven achievements ("optimized database queries, decreasing latency by 40%"). Interactive AI Career Chat: An in-app assistant to ask tailored follow-up questions on interview prep and section revamps. Freemium & Accessible Pricing: Includes a free tier and student-friendly pricing powered by Razorpay.

⚙️ How we built it Frontend: React 18, Framer Motion, custom Apple-grade dark UI, hosted on Vercel. Backend: Python Flask & Gunicorn on Render, utilizing PyPDF for robust multi-format document extraction. AI Engine: Groq Cloud running dynamic LLaMA models with an intelligent fallback/probe system to eliminate downtime. Auth & Database: Supabase (PostgreSQL) for user state and secure session management. Payments & Subscriptions: Razorpay checkout integration with HMAC-SHA256 verified webhooks for instant automated tier upgrades.

🧗 Challenges we ran into AI Model Deprecation & Reliability: Hardcoded LLM endpoints break when providers retire model tags. We engineered an automated dynamic model selector (get_best_model) that queries Groq's active model catalog, probes candidates with micro-tests, and falls back gracefully. Complex PDF Parsing: Real student resumes vary wildly with multi-column formats, LaTeX exports, and tables. We implemented multi-stage text extraction fallbacks. Tamper-Proof Webhook Security: Ensured Razorpay payment callbacks were cryptographically verified using HMAC signatures before altering any database permissions.

Secure server-to-server webhook verification and state synchronization between Supabase, Flask, and React. The importance of UX tone: feedback that is punchy and direct motivates users much better than robotic corporate advice.
