We are a team of Nepalese developers creating a fun game that blends the nostalgia of childhood classics with modern memes, perfect for those who cherish vintage games and love a good laugh.

Inspiration

GifMatchGame was inspired by our love for childhood memory games and the fun world of internet memes. We wanted to create a game that combines the nostalgia of matching card games with the humor and vibrancy of GIFs. This project allowed us to build something simple, yet engaging, while also experimenting with AWS services.

What it does

  • Search for a GIF using our GIPHY-powered search engine or choose from the suggestions.
  • Match pairs of GIFs hidden behind 16 cards.
  • Finish the game as fast as possible to see your name on the leaderboard—a tribute to childhood memories of friendly competition!

How we built it

  1. Game Logic: We started with the core functionality—implementing the matching logic for the cards. Each card corresponds to a GIF fetched via GIPHY’s API, making the gameplay dynamic and fun.

  2. UI/UX Design: Another team member focused on creating a visually appealing and user-friendly interface. Tailwind CSS and React were used to craft the design.

  3. Backend and Integration: Using AWS services, we implemented the leaderboard, hosted the game, and debugged the functionality. Amazon Q Developer helped simplify our backend logic and resolve issues.

  4. Deployment: The game was deployed using AWS Amplify, ensuring scalability and reliability.

Challenges we ran into

  • Dynamic Content Fetching: Ensuring smooth and fast retrieval of GIFs from GIPHY’s API while maintaining responsiveness.
  • AWS Policy Creation: Configuring the right policies for Lambda functions and S3 buckets was tricky but rewarding with the assistance of Amazon Q Developers.
  • Team Coordination: Balancing tasks among three developers and merging code without conflicts.
