Inspiration
University Hall is extremely inaccessible as a building. This is extremely apparent from photos and as soon as you walk up to the building. This is where midterms and classes are held, but also graduations. Events where every member of a family might come to see their loved one graduate. But they might not be able to. Why? Because it is inaccessible to. A proposed renovation, making it easier for students and families of students to access this building and space. A popular photo location, where everyone may be able to take photos.
What it does
Adding lighting and tactile pavement for those with vision impairments, fixing flooring and stairs materials to more accessible alternatives (no more uneven edges, slippery flooring in icy and cold conditions). Adding a ramp (with sufficient angle) for wheelchair accessibility. Double height railings on ramp AND stairs. Accessibility button on front doors.
How we built it
Contracted builders and installation companies. Existing companies McMaster already works with and has contracts for, adding on to and increasing scope of existing projects. Exploring project avenues with companies currently being worked with.
Challenges we ran into
Teammates dropping out of competition and taking all CAD files with them, needing to redo entire plan start to finish.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
CAD-ed model of University Hall Entrance and larger surrounding area. Model being space accurate.
What's next for MACCESS HALL
Let's make it happen! Will bring to MSU.
