India is home to thousands of unique traditions, art forms, and festivals — many passed down orally or confined to remote regions. Yet in the digital age, these rich cultural treasures remain scattered, undocumented, or simply unknown to the next generation.

As AI and digitization rapidly shape the future, we risk losing these stories forever.

MaatiMap was born from this urgency — to create a living cultural atlas that bridges generations, empowers local voices, and redefines cultural preservation in the age of AI.

Whether it's a ritual in Odisha, a folk dance in Rajasthan, or a harvest festival in Nagaland — MaatiMap brings these experiences to your screen, making them accessible, interactive, and unforgettable.

This project was built under the “Vibe: Coding for Social Impact” theme — using technology not just to innovate, but to preserve, celebrate, and elevate cultural identities across India.

MaatiMap is an AI-powered cultural discovery platform that helps users:

  • Browse by category — Art, Festivals, Food, Heritage, Music, Rituals, and more.
  • Navigate an interactive India map with cultural pins that unveil regional gems.
  • Play MaatiLoot — an interactive cultural treasure hunt game that lets users guess states based on clues, making learning fun.
  • Use AI-powered search to find cultural experiences by state, category, or keyword.
  • Bookmark and save favorite traditions to revisit and share later.
  • Experience a story-first, visual-first UI that feels immersive and poetic.
  • Add verified cultural items via a contributor dashboard (upcoming feature).
  • Celebrate authenticity with locally sourced images, media, and folk narratives.

🛠️ How We Built It

MaatiMap is built with a focus on clean design, AI-enhanced storytelling, and a scalable architecture ready to host rich cultural data at national scale:

  • Frontend: Next.js (App Router) + React + TypeScript
  • Styling: Tailwind CSS + ShadCN UI for minimal yet vibrant aesthetic
  • Database: MongoDB Atlas for storing rich cultural metadata
  • Authentication: Firebase Authentication for secure user login, signup, and real-time session management
  • Backend API: Custom Node.js + Next.js API routes
  • AI Orchestration: Genkit with Gemini (LLM) for cultural content summarization & search
  • Map & Location: Custom India SVG map with interactive state-level pinning
  • Deployment: Vercel for full-stack CI/CD and blazing-fast production hosting

⚔️ Challenges We Ran Into

  • Designing a non-linear, map-first discovery interface that feels natural and cultural
  • Handling SVG map interactivity without third-party map APIs
  • Structuring tag-based categorization across dynamic content types
  • Optimizing MongoDB queries for fast cultural content loading
  • Fine-tuning AI prompts to generate accurate, region-specific summaries
  • Creating a dark-themed cultural design system that respects tradition while feeling modern
  • Ensuring mobile-first performance for rural and youth audiences
