Inspiration

We are a small group of friends that love the idea of virtual worlds. We wanted to build a fun world that has some basis in real science. We ended up being most inspired by the immune system and the all-out battles that our microbiomes go through every second of every day to keep us happy and healthy. We also saw a fantastic opportunity to educate people about biology (even though we take some creative liberties!) and the complexity of our immune systems through an immersive experience.

What it does

The Micro-Unity Navigating Internal Treatment for You (M-UNITY) world is world inspired by biology and ideas around the immune system. Set in a future where pathogens are resistant to medicine, humans are miniaturized and sent directly into an individual's bloodstream to protect them from disease and illness. Players take on the role of being humanity's last defense against these microscopic invaders!

How we built it

This world was built primarily with the Meta Horizon Worlds desktop editor. Multimodal Llama integration was very useful for a variety of iterations on scripting and 3d assets. However, we also used Blender, Ableton for some audio production, and other AI media workflows in tandem with the MHW desktop editor.

Challenges we ran into

Figuring out how to collaborate with each other on the MHW platform was a little difficult at first. We tried to do some of the cloud editing at the same time but ran into all sorts of issues like scripts not compiling or the virtual scene becoming glitchy or unresponsive after a short while. We ended up building things out in separate worlds but also found the merging of worlds and assets to be a little painful. Lastly, it did prove a little difficult sometimes to do things that we take for granted in other 3D software such as Unity, like being able to easily move and transform things, add different kinds of media - i.e., custom audio needed to be recorded into the world, there was no support for videos. Also, we didn't have an easy way to animate objects, which we spent a fair amount of time trying to figure out.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're happy to have a place that starts to build out the idea of the world - it's whacky and zany and has lots of room to grow! We are also proud to have worked together over the weeks on a new platform that none of us were very familiar with. Lastly, we're proud of the idea itself because there is so much more to explore and flesh out.

What we learned

This is one of our first projects as a team, so it was great to learn how to work together across design, project management, and development. We also had to learn about the Meta Horizon World Editor from scratch. Luckily, we also learned that when we have an idea of where we want to go, generative AI tools can help us realize the right and wrong paths really quickly.

What's next for M-UNITY

We would love to see what people think about the idea of the world. We have lots of ideas to make more content inspired by biology and the immune system. More game modes, mechanics, and storytelling elements can come from this idea - we are excited to explore them!
