Inspiration

My family recently attended a bar trivia night where players listened to a robot recite music lyrics from popular songs like Outkast's Hey Ya! and Taylor Swift's 22. It was challenging and hilarious - the whole place was laughing hysterically. We thought it was great fun and would make for a fun community game on Reddit.

What it does

  1. Listen: Click the "LISTEN >" button to hear Lyra's robotic interpretation of a song
  2. Guess: Type your guess for the song title in the input field
  3. Get Help: Use the "> haz hint ?" button for a helpful clue, or "> reveal <0>" to see the full lyrics
  4. Submit: Once you guess correctly, you can submit your own song for others to guess!

How we built it

This is my 3rd Devvit project and by far the most fun one to build. I started with a React starter template and implemented the basic gameplay. I recruited help from friends, a world class designer and dev duie to help with the UX, components and the awesome animations of Lyra dancing that you see on the splash page and while you play.

Challenges we ran into

Devvit does not have great support for audio files. Only images can be uploaded to Reddit's media backend so I currently need to add each file as part of the project. In order to better support user generated content I will need to move the audio hosting to an external service or beg the Devvit team for audio file support.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I really love this concept and the visual appeal. Lyra the robot brings the whole thing to life and just makes you feel warm and fuzzy, even though her singing could use some refinement.

What we learned

I learned how powerful Devvit Web really is. The ability to connect with Reddit users worldwide is amazing and this framework has very few limitations. In my mind, the major learnings are ahead of us as we observe how people interact with the game and submit their own lyrical puzzles.

What's next for Lyrrit

We want to add more variety to the game play. More characters, more voices, different variants that make it fun to play with lyrics. We hope this Devvit app is just the beginning as we want to get this game concept into every group of friends who love music.
