Inspiration

In today’s hyper-connected world, people are constantly communicating — yet genuinely feeling understood is becoming rarer. A simple message like “How are you?” is often answered with “I’m okay,” even when someone is struggling deeply. Text-based communication flattens emotion, hides nuance, and makes it easy for pain to go unnoticed.

For many people — especially young adults and students — emotional struggles are further silenced by cultural stigma, fear of judgment, or the lack of a safe space to express themselves honestly.

LyraSpace was created to address this gap. It is a digital space where emotions don’t need to be simplified, masked, or rushed — and where empathy is not just offered, but experienced.

What It Does

LyraSpace is an emotionally intelligent web app designed to help users process emotions, feel understood, and develop empathy through guided reflection and perspective-taking.

🪞 Empathy Mirror™ (Core Innovation)

Empathy Mirror™ allows users to see their emotions reflected through another human perspective. Instead of simply responding to how someone feels, Lyra reframes emotional messages through lenses such as:

  • Future You
  • Someone Who Cares About You
  • A Peer on a Similar Path

This structured reflection helps users:

  • Articulate difficult emotions
  • Feel validated without judgment
  • Learn how empathy works through experience

💬 Emotionally Intelligent Companion (Lyra)

Lyra is a warm, non-clinical AI companion that:

  • Reflects emotions clearly and compassionately
  • Avoids diagnoses or medical advice
  • Encourages gentle self-reflection and expression

📊 Mood Insights & Reflection

LyraSpace tracks emotional tone across sessions and visualizes mood trends using charts, helping users notice patterns and reflect on their emotional well-being over time.

🎨 Safe, Soothing Interface

The app features a calming, hacker-inspired UI with subtle animations and a friendly mascot that creates a welcoming, non-intimidating environment for emotional expression.

How I Built It

  • Frontend: React + Tailwind CSS, Framer Motion for animations
  • AI & NLP: Groq LLM API for fast, responsive emotional reflection
  • Backend & Storage: Firebase for session records and mood logs
  • Data Visualization: Chart.js for mood trends and insights

Empathy Mirror™ is implemented through perspective-specific system prompts and structured response formats, ensuring consistent, intentional emotional reflection rather than generic chatbot replies.

Challenges I Ran Into

  • Designing an AI that feels empathetic without sounding clinical or generic
  • Avoiding over-advice while still offering meaningful reflection
  • Translating abstract emotional intelligence into a clear, visible product feature
  • Balancing ambition with feasibility within the hackathon timeframe

Accomplishments I am Proud Of

  • Creating Empathy Mirror™, a novel empathy-focused interaction mechanic
  • Building a non-judgmental, emotionally safe AI experience
  • Successfully integrating mood analytics without medicalizing emotions
  • Delivering a polished, usable prototype within the hackathon window

What I Learned

  • How to design AI interactions that prioritize emotional safety
  • Practical use of Firebase for session persistence
  • Visualizing emotional data responsibly with Chart.js
  • The importance of making empathy visible as a product feature

What’s Next for LyraSpace

  • Expanding Empathy Mirror™ with cultural and intergenerational perspectives
  • Enhancing the Lyra mascot with richer animations and interactions
  • Optional peer-to-peer empathy reflections (opt-in and moderated)
  • Educational use cases for teaching empathy and emotional literacy *Voice input and output *Connecting Peerbridge Mental Health experts to users when necessary
