Luvia: Amplifying Nature's Wisdom Through Living Soundscapes
The Inspiration
The story of Luvia began with two co-founders from different backgrounds who found common ground in Byron Bay. Shaun Clifford brought years of experience from his award-winning sound design studio Cheshire Audio, creating impactful audio for leading brands. Alice Moffett had been nurturing purpose-driven companies through her consultancy Self Seed, focusing on wellness and social impact sectors. Together, they recognized how technology's promise of connection was actually driving people further from the natural world and themselves.
Our mission became clear: amplify nature's wisdom and inspire a stronger connection to self and our natural world through the art of sound.
We wanted to move beyond meditation apps with their looped tracks. Our vision was for soundscapes that evolve and respond, bringing nature's transformative power into any space, from a busy professional's home office to a luxury wellness retreat. We sought to honor both nature's voice and the ancient wisdom carried in traditional instruments like the Japanese Shakuhachi and Koto, connecting timeless traditions with modern technology.
What We Learned
Our journey from Byron Bay to Japan, Costa Rica to Mexico, Guatemala to New Zealand, and Bali taught us invaluable lessons:
Sound Carries Spirit: Recording in these sacred places revealed that authentic sound requires more than technical quality. We needed to capture the spirit of place, people, and presence. Every location brought unique acoustic signatures impossible to replicate in a studio.
Dual Audiences, Unified Mission: Through Shaun's work with commercial brands and Alice's experience in wellness sectors, we discovered our unique position serving both individuals seeking personal transformation and professionals creating transformative spaces. This dual focus became our strength, allowing us to build something sustainable.
Traditional Musicians as Partners, Not Performers: Working with master musicians like Van Eyshow on Shakuhachi showed us the importance of deep collaboration. These artists shared centuries of tradition with us, requiring respect, patience, and genuine partnership.
How We Built It
Building Luvia required harmonizing artistry with technology. We traveled the globe recording our sound libraries using binaural technology before a single line of code was written:
The Sound Journey
- Global Recording Expeditions: We immersed ourselves completely in each environment. From Japanese forests where we captured Shakuhachi echoing through ancient trees, to Costa Rican rainforests alive with biodiversity, each expedition added unique layers to our sound library.
- Nature-Inspired Algorithm: We developed a proprietary algorithm that mimics nature's own patterns, never quite repeating, always evolving. This creates soundscapes that feel alive, avoiding the mental fatigue of loops.
- Mood-Enhancing Frequencies: Integrated carefully calibrated frequencies that support different states including focus, relaxation, and deep sleep, based on neuroscience research and traditional sound healing practices.
- Managing Freelancers: With little technical knowledge outside of audio engineering when we started we had to quickly learn how to work with and manage our freelance developers to ensure Luvia met our exacting vision. In this process we learned more about software development than we could have imagined and how to collaborate effectively. We also learnt how to build in systems like RevenueCat and Customer.io ourselves which has made managing the app marketing and monetisation much easier.
RevenueCat Implementation
Flexible Subscription Architecture: Leveraged RevenueCat to create a nuanced pricing model:
- Individual plans for personal use
- Professional licenses for commercial spaces (fully licensed for public use)
- Special Founder discount subscriptions and custom paywall for early supporters
- We will use A/B testing to optimize for conversions
- Web Billing for Professional plans
Cross-Platform Harmony: Using RevenueCat's infrastructure to ensure seamless experiences whether users accessed Luvia on iOS, Web Billing, or future platforms, maintaining their preferences and subscriptions across all devices.
Analytics-Driven Refinement: RevenueCat's detailed analytics will help us understand user behavior patterns, optimizing everything from trial length to renewal timing.
Technical Innovation
- Real-Time Soundscape Generation: Built an engine that layers multiple sound sources dynamically, ensuring each session is unique while maintaining harmonic coherence
- Adaptive Audio Settings: Developed an intuitive interface for users to easily build and save their own soundscapes dynamically with instant changes to the sound layers in the audio engine. Giving total control to the audio experience with no technical knowledge required by the user.
- Professional-Grade Output: Ensured our audio engine could output at quality levels suitable for high-end commercial sound systems, beyond personal headphones
The Challenges We Faced
Each expedition presented unique obstacles:
Cultural Bridge Building: Recording traditional instruments required deep cultural understanding. In Japan, we spent time in ceremony before recording a single note of Shakuhachi. We learned that rushing would disrespect the tradition and result in soulless sound. This patience became fundamental to our process.
The Revenue Model Evolution: Initially, we struggled with how to price transformation. Shaun's commercial experience suggested premium pricing, while Alice's social impact background pushed for accessibility. RevenueCat's testing capabilities helped us find the balance with tiered pricing that made personal use accessible while properly valuing commercial licensing. We discovered professionals would pay premium prices for properly licensed, high-quality soundscapes that enhanced their spaces.
Technical Challenges in Natural Spaces: Recording in remote locations, from Guatemalan highlands to New Zealand forests, meant dealing with unpredictable conditions. We developed portable, weather-resistant recording processes and learned to work with natural elements. Some of our best recordings came from embracing unexpected moments like a sudden rain in Bali or whale songs off Byron Bay.
The iOS Audio Architecture Marathon: Building the algorithm that powers the Luvia audio engine proved incredibly complex. Our dynamic layering system worked perfectly in controlled environments but stuttered when testing on iOS in beta. After weeks of debugging, we rewrote our entire algorithm, ultimately creating a more efficient engine that maintains seamless audio across iOS versions.
Where We Are Now
We launched only days ago, on September 28, 2025 and Luvia is already being used by dozens of real people in 5 countries. RevenueCat paywalls have made it easy to set up our launch promotion to activate our waitlist audience. We are already in discussions with spas and wellness venues who are excited to use Luvia to craft custom soundscapes for their guests. Our travels continue, with new collaborations bringing fresh voices and places into our ever-expanding library of living soundscapes.
With RevenueCat powering our subscription infrastructure, we can focus on what matters most: capturing the spirit of our planet's most beautiful places and sharing it with those who need it most. Whether it's a CEO finding focus before a crucial meeting, a massage therapist creating the perfect healing environment, or someone simply seeking better sleep, Luvia delivers personalized, evolving soundscapes that transform spaces and lives.
Our commitment to sustainable business, authentic cultural collaboration (guided by our work with traditional musicians), and technical excellence (powered by Shaun's audio expertise and Alice's strategic vision) has created something unique in the wellness space. We are now in the final stages of formalising our impact model and will be donating a percentage of profit to environmental and cultural projects that benefit the cultures and ecosystems we showcase in Luvia.
The journey from that first conversation in Byron Bay to a global platform has been profound.
