Inspiration
Periods are often treated as something to simply “track” — a date to record, a prediction to check, and a calendar to follow. But a menstrual cycle can influence much more than dates. It can affect mood, energy, comfort, routines, and overall wellbeing.
We wanted to build something that treats the person behind the data, not just the data itself.
That became Lunelle — a cycle and wellness companion designed around one simple idea:
Track your cycle. Understand yourself. Be gentle with yourself.
Our goal was to make cycle awareness feel less clinical, less overwhelming, and more supportive while still giving users useful information they can actually act on.
What it does
Lunelle brings cycle tracking, self-understanding, and emotional wellbeing into one personalized experience.
Users can log their periods, visualize their cycle through an interactive calendar, understand their current cycle phase, and receive personalized cycle insights.
But Lunelle goes beyond prediction.
- Cycle Tracking — Record periods and understand where you are in your cycle.
- Interactive Calendar — See past, current, and expected cycle days at a glance.
- Cycle Insights — Turn cycle data into understandable, useful information rather than raw numbers.
- AI Companion — Talk naturally about your cycle, mood, and everyday experiences and receive supportive, personalized guidance.
- Journal — Reflect on emotions, experiences, and patterns while building a personal history alongside cycle data.
- Relax — Access calming experiences designed to encourage moments of rest and self-care.
- Memory Match — A lightweight, playful experience that gives users a mental break.
- Blossom & Moonlight — Two visual modes that let the experience adapt to different moods and preferences.
The result is not just a period tracker. Lunelle is designed to help users notice patterns, understand their bodies, reflect on how they feel, and make more informed everyday choices.
How we built it
We built Lunelle as a responsive web application with a modular architecture designed to connect tracking, personalization, and AI into one experience.
The frontend uses React, Vite, and Tailwind CSS, with Node.js and Express supporting backend functionality and Supabase handling authentication and persistent user data.
The AI Companion was designed as part of the core product experience rather than as a separate chatbot. It can use the context of the user's cycle and conversations to make interactions more relevant and supportive.
We also developed a consistent design system around Lunelle's Blossom and Moonlight themes, carrying the same visual language, interactions, and bunny mascot across the application.
Because Lunelle is intended for everyday use, we prioritized responsive design, ensuring the experience works naturally across desktop and mobile screens.
Challenges we ran into
Our biggest challenge was solving a design problem as much as a technical one:
How do you communicate personal health information without making the experience feel clinical or intimidating?
We had to balance useful information with simplicity, especially when presenting cycle predictions and insights.
Another major challenge was connecting the Journal and AI Companion while respecting the highly personal nature of journal entries. We wanted the AI to provide more meaningful, contextual support without compromising user privacy. This meant carefully considering what information should be accessible to the AI, how context should be used, and how to avoid turning deeply personal reflections into unnecessary data exposure.
We also had to integrate multiple experiences like cycle tracking, AI conversations, journaling, relaxation, and playful interactions without making Lunelle feel like a collection of unrelated features.
Making the AI Companion feel genuinely supportive instead of like a generic chatbot was another challenge. We had to think carefully about conversational tone, context, and how AI should complement rather than overwhelm the user's experience.
Finally, building a polished, responsive product within hackathon constraints forced us to prioritize ruthlessly, iterate quickly, and make meaningful product decisions under time pressure.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that Lunelle evolved from an idea into a complete, interactive wellness experience rather than a collection of mockups.
We successfully connected:
cycle data → personalized insights → AI conversation → journaling → self-care
into one cohesive product journey.
We're especially proud of making the AI Companion part of that journey. Instead of simply asking an AI general questions, users can use Lunelle as a space to talk about how they're feeling and understand their cycle in context.
We're also proud of building both Blossom and Moonlight experiences while maintaining a consistent product identity across the application.
Most importantly, we built Lunelle around a real human need: making cycle awareness more understandable, approachable, and emotionally supportive.
What we learned
Lunelle taught us that building a useful product isn't simply about adding more features.
The most important question is:
Does this feature make the user's life easier, clearer, or better?
We learned how to connect persistent user data with a responsive frontend, integrate AI into a real user experience, design a cohesive visual system, and iterate rapidly under hackathon constraints.
We also learned that AI becomes much more valuable when it is given meaningful context. A generic chatbot can answer questions; a contextual companion can make an experience feel personal.
Most importantly, we learned how much empathy matters in product design, especially when building for personal and sensitive experiences.
What's next for Lunelle
We see Lunelle growing from a web application into a complete women's wellness companion that can support users through different stages of their journey.
Our next step is to bring Lunelle to the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, making the experience accessible to more women beyond the hackathon.
We also want Lunelle to evolve beyond cycle tracking. In the future, when a user enters a pregnancy journey, the experience could adapt accordingly — transforming from cycle tracking into a personalized pregnancy companion, with relevant tracking, guidance, and wellbeing features throughout pregnancy.
We plan to expand the self-care experience with more calming music tracks, mindful games, and wellness activities, giving users more ways to pause, reflect, and take care of themselves.
We also want to deepen the connection between cycle patterns, journaling, and AI while continuing to make privacy and user control foundational principles of the product.
Ultimately, our vision is for Lunelle to become an all-in-one, compassionate wellness companion that grows with its users — from understanding their cycles to supporting them through major changes in their lives.
Lunelle isn't just about tracking a cycle. It's about understanding yourself through every stage of the journey.
