Inspiration

Our team was inspired by the fact that it's currently Lunar New Year, and we wanted to base our project on the many traditions related to this holiday. We were also inspired by the traditional foods served by several cultures on Lunar New Year.

What it does

Our game is an interactive, educational game where the user follows the cooking journey of the Dragon, the Lunar New Year animal for 2024. The Dragon is instructed by Grandma Tiger, the Lunar New Year animal for 2022, to make this year’s dinner. The user helps the dragon make mooncakes, a traditional dessert. The user must use the ingredients in the right order and avoid using the incorrect ingredients. The dragon then finishes making the desert and eats with the other Lunar New Year animals, symbolizing the unity of family. The player takes away a better understanding of the significance of the food, traditions, and holidays of the Lunar New Year.

How we built it

We used Javascript and the p5play library in Replit to help us build this game. We also used drawing software to create the images and backgrounds for our game.

Challenges we ran into

We had some struggles with the art, as our team made all the artwork that was used in this game. We are beginners in pixel art, so it took a long time to make the assets. However, we were able to make our game personalized and engaging as a result.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the fact that we were able to reach our goals, as we were able to create the images and functions that we wanted. Additionally, we are proud of how we were able to convey a story that helped the user learn something new.

What we learned

We learned how to use a library that was relatively new to us (p5.js). Additionally, one of us learned a completely new language (javascript), while two of us learned how to make pixel art using a new software. In researching for the project, we also learned a lot about Lunar New Year and cultural traditions.

What's next for Lunar Feast

Lunar Feast can be further developed by adding more information about Lunar New Year traditions. By adding several other foods to the cookbook, we can help people learn to cook while knowing about the cultural significance of some foods. Additionally, we can add more tangible items that display even more information, such as the altar.
