LUMORA
Every Child. Every Pace. Every Possibility.
Inspiration
We were inspired by a simple problem: that not every child has the same learning pace or to be privileged enough to have access to technology. Children living in orphanages and other low resource environments may need to share devices, have limited internet access, or even need to depend heavily on caregivers for their learning proccess
We wanted to create something that does not assume every child has their own devices such as phone or laptop. Instead, Lumora combines shared devices, offline learning, physical activities, and personalized learning pace and competency, so that each and every children can learn based on what they actually need.
UNICEF highlights the inequality of access to devices and stable connection remains a major barrier to equitable digital learning in a lot of country such as, Indonesia.
What it does
Lumora is an offline centered personalized learning platform for children in low resource environments.
Children can use a shared tablet or computer to complete short lessons and activities. Lumora can help each children by adapting the next activities based on every childs performance, while physical learning kits would allow them to continue learning even when a device is unavailable.
The childs guardian can monitor progress and verify completed learning milestones we would provide. Lumora can also create a verifiable learning record using blockchain, allowing a child's achievements to remain verifiable and difficult to falsify without putting sensitive personal information on chain.
How we built it
Lumora is designed as a lightweight web application that can run on shared devices and work with limited connectivity. The main system consists of: Frontend: [React / Vue] Backend: [Node.js / Firebase] Database: [Firebase / PostgreSQL] AI: Personalized activity recommendation based on learning performance Web3: Smart contracts for verified learning milestones Storage: Offline/local storage for learning materials and progress The system follows this flow: Child → Diagnostic Activity → Personalized Learning → Assessment → Progress → Caregiver Verification → Blockchain Credential The actual personal information and learning data remain off-chain, while the blockchain is used for verification and proof of completed milestones.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was designing for children who may not have their own devices or stable internet access. A normal learning application would assume that every student can access a phone or laptop, which is not realistic for our target users. We therefore designed Lumora around shared devices and offline learning, with physical activities that can work alongside the digital platform. Another challenge was deciding what information should be stored on the blockchain. Since children’s educational data is sensitive, we decided not to put personal information directly on-chain and instead use blockchain only for verification.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that Lumora is not simply another AI tutoring platform. It is designed around the actual limitations of the communities we want to help. Our MVP combines: personalized learning offline-first access shared-device learning physical learning activities caregiver progress tracking verifiable learning milestones We also wanted the project to give children something that lasts beyond one learning session: a record of what they have learned and achieved.
What we learned
We learned that building for accessibility means not starting with technology, but starting with the user's situation. A powerful AI tutor is not very useful if the child cannot access a device or internet connection. We also learned that Web3 should not be added just because it is part of the hackathon. It should solve a real problem — in Lumora's case, creating a portable and verifiable record of learning achievements.
What's next for Lumora
Our next step is to test Lumora with a real learning environment and gather feedback from children, caregivers, and educators. In the future, we want to expand Lumora beyond basic academic subjects into: financial literacy digital literacy communication skills career preparation life skills We also want to support more low-resource environments such as community learning centers, shelters, and schools with limited access to technology. Our long-term goal is simple: No child's learning progress should be limited by their access to a personal device, and no achievement should disappear when their circumstances change.
