🌱 About the Project — Lumora
💡 Inspiration
Food waste is one of those problems everyone knows exists, yet it continues to happen quietly around us — in homes, events, and local communities. At the same time, many people nearby struggle to access fresh meals.
Lumora was inspired by this contradiction.
We wanted to build something simple, human, and practical — a platform that makes it easy to share surplus food instead of throwing it away, while also creating opportunities for people to help one another through volunteering. Rather than focusing on abstract climate metrics, Lumora focuses on real, everyday actions that reduce waste and support communities.
🛠️ What We Built
Lumora is a web platform that connects three actions into one flow:
- Donate Food – Users can list surplus food with pickup details.
- Receive Food – Users can browse and claim available donations nearby.
- Volunteer – Users can help pick up and deliver food to those in need.
Instead of rigid user roles, Lumora is action-based — anyone can donate, receive, or volunteer at any time. This keeps the experience flexible, inclusive, and realistic.
The platform is designed to feel like a real product, not just a demo:
- Clean dashboards
- Clear workflows
- Visible community activity
- Status tracking for donations and volunteer tasks
⚙️ How We Built It
- Frontend: React.js
- Backend: Node.js + Express
- Database: MySQL
- UI Design: Minimal, responsive, and accessibility-focused
- Architecture: Modular backend (controllers, routes), component-based frontend
For the hackathon, we used mock data to simulate real-world usage and demonstrate full workflows without requiring a live deployment.
📚 What We Learned
Building Lumora taught us more than just technical skills:
- How small UX decisions dramatically affect usability
- Why clarity beats complexity in social impact products
- How to design software that feels trustworthy and human
- The importance of showing impact, not just features
🚧 Challenges We Faced
- Designing workflows without rigid user roles
- Keeping pages informative without overwhelming users
- Making the app feel alive using mock data
- Ensuring consistent UI across multiple dashboards
Each challenge pushed us to simplify, refine, and focus on what truly matters — usability and impact.
🌍 Why Lumora Matters
Lumora is not just about food — it’s about community-driven sustainability. By reducing food waste and encouraging local participation, small actions can create meaningful environmental and social change.
This project is a step toward making sustainability practical, personal, and accessible.
