🧠 Inspiration
In many parts of Africa, millions of people in low-resource communities still face major barriers when trying to access reliable health information. Many lack smartphones, stable internet, or even basic literacy skills. Inspired by this reality, LumoHealth was created to bridge the gap using AI-powered voice technology combined with IVR (Interactive Voice Response) and USSD to ensure that anyone — with or without a smartphone — can access healthcare guidance in local languages.
💡 What it does
LumoHealth is an AI-powered health assistant that allows users to:
Access accurate health advice in local languages via voice calls
Use USSD shortcodes like *347*1# to navigate health services
Connect with pre-recorded IVR menus for offline guidance
Get triage assistance and referral suggestions without needing the internet This makes LumoHealth a powerful tool for people in rural or underserved regions.
🛠️ How we built it
We designed the voice interaction flow using tools like Canva and InShot
We used AI voice synthesis to generate natural speech in different local languages
The IVR demo was created by simulating a multi-step menu with audio prompts
The USSD mockup was inspired by common shortcodes used by telecom providers
All content was integrated and edited into a clear, mobile-friendly demo video
🚧 Challenges we ran into
Limited time to prototype and record multilingual voiceovers
Creating a realistic IVR flow without access to telecom infrastructure
Designing for both online and offline users without overcomplicating the experience
Ensuring cultural relevance and clarity in health messaging
🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of
Created a fully voice-enabled health solution for users with no internet access
Simulated both IVR and USSD interfaces in our demo video
Communicated a complex health tech concept in an easy-to-understand format
Worked independently to plan, script, design, and present the solution from scratch
📚 What we learned
How to tailor digital health tools for offline-first communities
The importance of IVR and USSD as bridges for digital inclusion
Effective storytelling using voice, visuals, and scripts to demo ideas
How to simplify AI and tech innovation for a wide range of users
🚀 What's next for LumoHealth
