Inspiration
Historical information about major catastrophes is often scattered across various sources and presented as dry facts. Our goal was to consolidate the world's most significant disasters into a single, professional, and user-friendly platform, presenting them with an analytical approach in multiple languages.
What it does
LUMINOS (Dark Chronicles) is an interactive platform featuring over 50 of history's largest tragedies, including wars, epidemics, and famines. The application allows users to search by year, century, or category. It fetches real-time data from Wikipedia for each event and provides a specialized "Prevention/Analysis" block to help users understand the underlying causes of these tragedies.
How we built it
The project was developed on the Medo.dev platform using React:
- Data Integration: We implemented a dynamic data retrieval system using the Wikipedia REST API across 5 languages (UZ, RU, EN, ZH, AR).
- UI/UX: A "Dark Editorial" aesthetic was created using Playfair Display and IBM Plex Mono fonts.
- Localization: Full RTL (Right-to-Left) interface support was implemented specifically for the Arabic language.
Challenges we ran into
Our biggest challenge was formatting inconsistent data from various language-specific Wikipedia APIs and ensuring high-quality images were consistently loaded from English sources regardless of the selected UI language.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We have successfully built a professional educational tool that works instantly without requiring API keys. It delivers a fast and simple user experience while providing comprehensive historical data in multiple languages.
What's next
In the future, we plan to integrate the Gemini API to add AI-driven analysis for each historical event and introduce an "AI Chat" feature, allowing users to "converse" with witnesses or personas related to these events.
