Inspiration
During our brainstorming sessions about the challenges faced by women in the tech industry, we identified a significant issue: male toxicity in video games. This problem has been observed firsthand by every member of our team, including a male teammate who has witnessed negative and derogatory comments directed at female players. These comments occur even if the female player remains silent, simply because of a feminine username in team voice chats and in-game messages.
Motivated by these experiences, we developed a solution aimed at creating a secure environment where women can connect and collaborate. We recognize that the number of female gamers is significantly fewer compared to their male counterparts, which further emphasizes the need for a dedicated space for women.
We named our platform Luminaras as a nod to the fact that gaming often happens at night. The name reflects our goal to illuminate and empower the gaming experience for women. Inspired by the spirit of "girls supporting girls," we've integrated enhanced networking features to foster collaboration and build a supportive community. Luminaras is more than just a gaming platform; it's a movement to change the gaming culture and ensure that women have a safe, respectful, and empowering space to game.
What it does
Luminaras stands out from existing platforms like Discord with its innovative "Quick Match" feature, which cleverly plays on the concept of a quick-match game. This unique tool allows users to swipe to connect with or pass on other female gamers who not only play the same game but are also looking for the same level of gameplay. It’s an ideal way to find gaming partners who may even share other common interests.
One of our standout features is tailored specifically for content creators. Users can indicate on their profiles if they produce content, which opens up opportunities for collaboration within the platform, helping to grow channels and audiences in a supportive environment.
Users can personalize their profiles, showcasing how they want to be seen and connect with others in the community. Beyond individual connections, our platform includes a robust messaging system and the ability to create groups, making it easy to organize and participate in video game tournaments.
Additionally, Luminaras offers a dedicated news space where users can post updates about tournaments or other gaming events. This feature empowers our community by facilitating the setup of all-female tournaments, enhancing visibility, and promoting female participation in the competitive gaming scene.
With Luminaras, we’re not just creating a platform; we’re fostering a vibrant community where female gamers can thrive, connect, and lead in the gaming world.
How we built it
We built our website using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the front end. For the back end, we used JavaScript. We used Replit as our development environment and leveraged the Replit AI Agent for debugging assistance. Additionally, we used Canva to design our logo. Throughout the process, we collaborated closely to bring our vision to life while troubleshooting issues and refining features along the way.
Challenges we ran into
Because none of us are advanced in web development, creating the specific features as we envisioned them was challenging, necessitating extensive research and bug fixing. Integrating real-time interaction capabilities like the "quick match" feature tested our problem-solving skills and required us to rapidly adapt and learn new technologies to meet our objectives.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Participating in our first hackathon, we are particularly proud of our teamwork and the dynamic we developed for bouncing ideas off each other. The ability to effectively share and refine ideas played a crucial role in the creation of clever names and concepts that truly brought our platform to life. This collaborative spirit not only enhanced our creativity but also deepened our investment in the project. Now, we find ourselves continuously thinking about new features and the potential growth of the platform. Our team's synergy has been a key driver in crafting a unique and empowering space for female gamers, and it fuels our enthusiasm for what we can achieve next.
What we learned
This project was a big learning curve for all of us, particularly in web development. We learned how to handle live data and user interactions on our platform, which was new territory for us. We also figured out how crucial it is to split tasks effectively within our team. This helped us work on different parts of the project at the same time, making us more efficient and helping everything come together more smoothly. Overall, this experience has improved our problem-solving skills and given us a better understanding of how to build and improve websites.
What's next for Luminaras
Although our platform currently includes a report system, we recognize the limitation of this mechanism in preventing banned users from creating new accounts. Moving forward, we plan to develop a more robust moderation system that incorporates advanced verification processes to prevent banned users from returning. Additionally, we aim to expand our features to include voice chat capabilities, allowing for richer and more personal interactions within the community. This will further establish Luminaras as a safe and empowering online spaces for women in gaming, and we will continue to innovate and adapt to the needs of our users.
