Inspiration

All of our team members were interested in making a game as we enjoy playing video games on our own time. While we were hesitant to tackle the task with most of us inexperienced with game development, we felt we could have fun with the prompt given. Ultimately we were inspired by the spirit of the hackathon and the Godot workshop and decided to take on the challenge of tackling a new game engine and take this as fun opportunity to learn something new. We also felt we could add a unique twist to the prompt of "limited space" by taking it to mean limited visible space.

What it does

We created a 2D vertical platformer where the goal is to climb to the top and deliver our hero Lumin, a lost flame bound to a lantern, to the great fire that will push back the encroaching darkness descending upon the world. Jump from platform to platform, recharging at campfires along the way. Make sure you move quick though, before the darkness surrounds you and you can't see the path upwards anymore.

How we built it

We built the game entirely using the Godot game engine. Godot is an open source game engine that offers a set of common tools for game development. We utilized these basic building blocks, and designed our own visual assets to bring our vision to life.

Challenges we ran into

None of the team members had used Godot before, as well, more than half of the team had no previous experience with game development. Learning a brand new engine and a brand new branch of development while coming up with the game design in such a short period of time was extremely challenging.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are really proud of how much we were able to accomplish in such a short period of time. We didn't have to compromise on any major design goals we came up with at the start and were able to produce a full fledged game. We are particularly proud of the light system employed in the game and the movement/physics approach we got working.

What we learned

We all learned how to use Godot to make a 2d game. Although we created a platformer the techniques and lessons learned can be applied to make any type of 2d game in the Godot game engine. We improved our teamwork and skills working under a time crunch. We came up with creative solutions to problems along the way and worked to our strengths.

What's next for Lumin's Limit

We want to come up with more levels and really polish the game so that we can one day hopefully publish it and share our game with the world at large so they may enjoy it as well.
