Inspiration

The idea for LumiHR was born out of firsthand frustration with the inefficiencies, biases, and repetitive tasks that plague traditional recruiting and HR processes, especially in fast-growing startups and underserved markets. As a founder who had built teams across diverse contexts, I saw how hard it was to find the right talent quickly, onboard them smoothly, and support them meaningfully through their employee journey.

There was a clear gap: HR teams were overwhelmed, recruitment was broken, and promising talent often went unnoticed. I wanted to build a solution that was intelligent, fair, and scalable, a system that could empower lean teams to operate like world-class organisations, using the power of AI.

What it does

LumiHR automates and personalises the entire employee lifecycle, from candidate sourcing and screening to onboarding, support, and performance management.

How we built it

Key tools and technologies used:

  • Backend: Node.js + Python for AI pipelines and integrations
  • Frontend: React + Tailwind for a sleek, responsive UI
  • AI/ML: OpenAI & custom NLP models for resume parsing, candidate ranking, and chatbot conversations
  • Data/Analytics: PostgreSQL + custom dashboards for HR metrics and reporting
  • Integrations: Calendars, ATS systems, and LMS platforms for seamless workflows
  • Built with: Bolt.new to rapidly prototype and launch the user-facing interface

Challenges we ran into

  • Balancing automation and human touch – Automating HR is tricky. We worked hard to ensure the platform didn’t feel robotic or impersonal.
  • Bias in data – Recruiting datasets can reflect historical inequities. We had to be intentional about how AI models scored candidates.
  • End-to-end integration – Bringing together recruiting, onboarding, and performance tools in one flow took deep systems thinking.

What we learned

Building LumiHR taught me:

  • How to design for trust in AI: transparency and fairness are non-negotiable when AI is involved in hiring.
  • The power of modular, agent-based thinking: letting each agent own a slice of the HR journey makes the system scalable.
  • The importance of simplicity in UX: HR users don’t want complexity; they want clarity, automation, and speed.
  • That AI is only as good as the human values guiding it: bias mitigation, explainability, and user empathy are essential.

What's next for LumiHR

LumiHR is more than just a tool; it is a step toward democratizing access to great hiring and people experiences, especially for teams in emerging markets who don’t have the luxury of massive HR departments. It’s about levelling the playing field, amplifying potential, and making HR more human, with the help of AI.
