Inspiration
LumiDraw explores a simple idea: drawing with light should feel as approachable as doodling. A few marks, a colour change and a little experimentation should be enough to create something worth keeping.
What it does
LumiDraw is a drawing app for iPhone and iPad that turns strokes into glowing artwork. Choose crisp or textured brushes, play with colour and brightness, and build your drawing across editable layers.
Replay the drawing stroke by stroke. Pause, scrub through the process, loop it or change the speed, then export the finished artwork as a photo or its replay as a video.
Guided practice introduces drawing, colour and brightness through making a drawing. No separate LumiDraw account is required, and drawings are stored on the device by default. The free version supports three saved drawings and watermarked exports. Plus adds unlimited saved drawings, exports without watermarks, canvas captures and optional iCloud synchronisation.
How it was built
LumiDraw combines SwiftUI and UIKit with PencilKit drawing input and a custom Metal renderer using radiance cascades. Lighting is integrated into creation, editing and replay. Drawings are stored locally, with optional CloudKit synchronisation. RevenueCat manages monthly and lifetime purchase offerings through a shared Plus entitlement.
Challenges
A major challenge was keeping the artwork and its lighting consistent while the drawing changed. Live strokes, completed strokes, layers, erasing and replay each require the renderer to present the right state at the right time. The same care extends to reopening saved drawings and exporting photos and videos.
What we are proud of
LumiDraw brings a technically complex visual effect into familiar creative controls. The interface gives the artwork room, while replay makes the process of creating it something users can enjoy and share.
What we learned and what comes next
Rendering quality and interaction design have to be developed together. Our next priority is learning from real use: where people hesitate, what they enjoy creating, and when saving or sharing becomes valuable enough to upgrade.
